Bye-Bye Brackman
The Yankees closed the book, at least for now, on former first round pick Andrew Brackman today when they decided not to exercise their option on his contract. Considering that Brackman did his best to impersonate Nuke LaLoosh in the minors this year, it's not a shock. Brackman pitched 96 innings and managed to walk 75 guys, the same number he struck out. He was moved from the rotation, to the bullpen, where he pitched better and he even made three appearances out of the big league pen in September, but it is hard to say he is a prospect anymore at 26 with no control.
I didn't mind it then, so I won't pretend to mind the risk the Yankees took on Brackman now. It was a huge miss on their part, but consider this quote from Brian Cashman about Brackman made shortly after the 2007 draft-
“On our draft board, and I think on most people’s draft board before the season, he was No. 1 or No. 2 with David Price.”
We all know who David Price is and the Yankees are never going to have a shot at guys like him, unless they lose a lot more than they have. That requires them to take bigger risks in the draft to make up for poor draft position. Brackman was that type of risk.
Look at the guy they picked in the first round of 2008, Gerrit Cole. Does the name ring a bell? That's probably because he was the #1 pick overall in the 2011 draft because he didn't sign with the Yankees and became the best pitcher in the nation at UCLA. Unlike with Brackman, they were right about the talent, they just couldn't execute the signing.
Where the Yankees have been very successful is with international signings. Montero, Banuelos, Betances, Sanchez, Cano, Soriano, Rivera...they have used their money well in this arena. But, if MLB creates a worldwide draft, as some have speculated, the Yankees won't be able to do that anymore. Then we would really see a different approach from Brian Cashman and his lieutenants.
Comments
I've said this before and I'll repeat it: Brackman was an absolutely incredible pitcher when I saw him pitch for the Wolfpack. He had a late break that hit so many unsupecting ankles that he was virtually unhittable at the time. I am very sorry to see his talent evaporate like that. :/
Oh well, at least I was right about Cashman re-upping for another tour fo duty with us. :)

You definitely won that bet. But, I think I won one on Brackman? I need to write these things down :-)

Yeah Peter, we both won one so ... we're even. Besides, we'd never find a Mrs. Stahl's, so we at least dodged that dilemma completely. ;-)

A completely random blast from the past (OK, Sherman let's set the Wayback Machine for the mid to late 20th century).
What the name was of the best deli in Brighton Beach "way back when" or the name of the business that used to be where the Nathan's Famous is now located in Bay Ridge ?
Hey, it's a really quiet news period, the Jints just beat the Pats, so the planets are properly aligned for all NYers and ex-NYers - so I figured, why not.

Peter - the deli was Zei Mar. Everything there was INCREDIBLE. My fondest, funniest memory was when I brought a beautiful, blonde date there and she ordered a pastrami sandwich with - wait for it - a glass of milk. The look of horror on the waiter's face was something that could never be duplicated by the greatest actors of Hollywood. Gawd, she was gorgeous though. (LOL)
The Bay Ridge Nathan's is (or was, the last time I looked) on 86th St and 7th Avenue. That location used to be a drive-in burger joint called, wait for it, Mitchell's Drive-In. Muscle cars used to cruise that parking lot Friday and Saturday nights. Disputes regarding speeed and horsepower were resolved on 7th Ave commencing at the 86th street stop light then down towards the VA Hospital past Dyker golf course.
There was also a club/bar in Bay Ridge where I first heard a really fat kid named Leslie West play some swesome guitar. His group was the Vagrants, but I can't remember the club's name !

She must have been gorgeous to get away with that order. I gotta ask, she had mustard with the pastrami right so why, why, why the glass of milk? Ugh.
Thanks for the Nathan's tip, I might stop there for some dinner when I go check out "the lights" in December.
BTW- you know what famous parent-athlete learned the game on the infamous Dyker Heights course, right?

Peter,
Yeah, she was stunning. She later became a Playboy bunny. In my youth, I never asked what she was ordering or why, I just admired the package.
You got me on the Dyker Heights question. Who?

I can understand that, but the order still makes me gag.
The answer is Earl Woods. He was stationed at Fort Hamilton and took up the game by playing at Dyker.

Earl Woods? Cool! It's a very nice course.
About the meal - the waiter brought her a Dr. Brown's Black Cherry soda so the meal was salvaged. I don't imagine she would have been able to drink anything as radical as a Celery Tonic. The best part was the waiter's face. He never let me forget that incident. Looking back, I realize I missed some great opportunities to mess with him, but I was too young to seize the comedic moment.

The deli down the street from me sells Cel-Ray. I love that.
You should have asked the waiter for a side of mayo.
