Congrats Derek
That was simply awesome. And how amazing is it that the only two guys to get their 3,000th hit via a home run are Boggs and Jeter? (Note to BL, you will need to update your trivia question) Far too many words have been written about Derek so let's leave it at this. For 16 seasons it has been an absolute pleasure to watch him play.
One final note
Tickets I've sold:
A-Rod's 500th home run
A-Rod's 600th home run
Today's game
Tickets I've kept
2009 World Series Game 6

Another question: if you'd caught DJ's 3K homerun ball, what would you have done with it and what would you hope happened thereafter?
Give it back?
Sell it to MLB?
Auction it off?
Donate it to a charity for them to auction it off? (consult your tax attorney before doing that last one, it's tricky!)
So ... what would you do?

Give it to him. That fan did the right thing and it was nice to see the Yankees reward him for it.

Here's a sports article from the WSJ about catching the "DJ3K" ball. It discusses not only the "weirdo" option but also the "punk" option of throwing it back. Enjoy.

I read somewhere today that the guy who caught it still has significant college loans outstanding. I hope he gets some serious money for those season tickets they gave him.

That poor guy may also owe income taxes based on the value of the items he was awarded. I would laugh if it weren't so sad just how screwed this guy could be. Were the tickets and items he received gifts or barter-like income in exchange for the baseball? Stranger yet, if Jeter decides to pay the guy's tax bill, Jeter would have to pay a gift tax on the amount over the gift limitations.
There's a Bill Murray comedy in here somewhere. The screenplay is there for anyone to take, right now. :-)
