How Not To Handle A Legend
Does Jorge Posada deserve to hit 9th? Yes, in fact, he probably deserves to not even hit at all. .165/.272/.349 is worthy of a benching.
But, Joe Girardi totally screwed this up by initially trying to bat him 9th tonight. When I saw the lineup tonight I tweeted "Why not bench him instead of embarrassing him? Is Joe Torre managing tonight?" (BTW- you can follow my tweets @nysportsfanatic if you like Twitter) That's what this move was, a move to embarrass a proud player. You don't make this move against the Red Sox on national TV. If you want to bench him tonight, say he tweaked something running out a ball or something like that. Better yet, wait until Monday to do it. Batting him 9th makes no sense at all. At least Torre hit A-Rod 8th in a do-or-die playoff game. Girardi didn't have to do this tonight.
We will have to see what Jorge says after the game. I am not excusing Posada for not playing, but I simply can't believe Girardi was this stupid in his handling of the situation. Jorge should be fined and should apologize for that part of this incident. I'm really just kind of stunned by all of this right now. Girardi made the dumbest move of his tenure tonight. Stay tuned for the fallout.

what is of interest is that Posada is hitting .212 against righties but is hitless against lefties so far this season.
Beckett tonight (righty)
Lester tomorrow (lefty)
I agree, Girardi blew it.
Posada's wife just tweeted that he has stiffness in his back and couldn't go tonight...

I am sure you are shocked to know that she is inventing that story.
I'm really sad that Jorge apparently isn't going to just stand up and say he was pissed off and made a mistake.

I am indeed shocked. An athlete or athlete's spouse/girlfriend is tweeting something untrue?
This was part of the assumption when he signed that huge 4 year deal. This is the last year I believe and you got more than you should have out of an old catcher. No hard feelings should be had on either side. Go out gracefully. Announce retirement at end of season, play a minor bench role and hug at the end.

I agree, but how many athletes have done that in the last 20 years?

I think Brian Cashman needs to keep his mouth shut, especially in front of the Fox media muffins on a national broadcast, and let the manager and his player work things out. IOW: Congratulations Brian, you have demonstrated, once again, fast mouth syndrome. It would be different if you'd ever played the game of baseball professionally - it might even help you to understand what makes a player "tick", but you haven't ...

Over the years I've seen dislike of Cashman on here but this takes it to another level. A player backing out of the lineup no matter the circumstances of "feeling hurt" or disrespected is unacceptable. Goes back to the power of the unions and players. BECAUSE he makes $13m this year he (and all players) think they have rights they don't have.
I get it, Girardi screwed up.
I get it. Cashman tried to turn the screws on Posada and screwed up.
I get it. Posada is another in the long line of arrogant ME players instead of a team player.
Maybe he should have realized his time is done. Maybe the $13m played into it. Maybe he's confused and believes he's still contributing.

There were no winners last night other than the Red Sox. Truly an inept way to handle a problem with a veteran Yankee player.
And the fourth estate just *loves* to stir pot to see what juicy pieces of idiocy can be teased to the surface and into a headline.
