Game Tonight

Hey, there is actually a baseball game tonight between the Yankees and Red Sox. And, the Yankees really could use a win. But, I should probably focus on the story of the year so far, Jorge Posada.

Give Posada credit for doing today what he should have done last night. He apologized to Girardi and admitted his mistake. Unfortunately, Brian Cashman kept this issue alive with his stupid quote about disciplining Posada for last night, "We’ve got everything going on today and then I’ll obviously talk to the people above me. So I can’t answer that question right now, but when I talk to Hal Steinbrenner I’ll get some direction from him on everything after I fill him in on everything.”

Cashman did a terrible job throughout this process. He could have prevented this from escalating by avoiding the press last night and he should simply have said tonight that the issue was resolved. Really poor job by the GM and I wonder why he acted this way.

I am also mystified by the Yankees' keeping Sanit on the roster. Maybe he could pitch today, but with Posada out of the lineup the bench is extremely thin. If anyone in the starting lineup gets hurt, Nunez is the only guy who can realistically fill in unless the Yankees are willing to give up the DH. Why do they keep putting themselves into this spot? With Price on the mound for Tampa tomorrow, it seems likely Posada will sit again. Might be nice to drop the 8th pitcher and get a bat on the roster.

Peter, aren't you being overly critical of the Yankees? First you say Girardi "screwed things up" by handling things the way he did last night and that Cashman provided a "stupid quote" in regards to the Posada issue.

Aren't you essentially letting the inmates run the asylum here? Yes you indicate that Posada should get fined, but let's face it, Posada isn't good right now and if Girardi thinks batting him 9th is what's best for the team (vs. your idea of just benching him), the screw Posada, he should bat 9th and like it, especially after telling the world he put himself in this situation.

Back to the management/front office of the Yankees, they are human and making Human Resources type decision on the fly can be difficult, especially when you aren't necessary given a night to sleep on it. Posada gave Girardi and Cashman all of a few minutes to handle things with the press.

Did they handle it perfectly? No, but given the ticking clock they have to the next pitch, the next game, you at least need to give them some credit.

There is a time and a place for everything. Dropping Posada to the 9th spot should have happened either before or after the Red Sox series. I don't excuse his refusal to play, but I understand why he perceived his demotion on Saturday as an insult.

From the moment you first play baseball there are stigmas attached to hitting 9th. Posada has hit 6th or 7th all year and Girardi is way too smart not to have known that dropping him to 9th was an insult.

wobble wobble as the wheels loosen.....feeling pretty old and shaky all of a sudden. And just think what this would look like if Colon and Garcia weren't in 2005 form.

I'll barge in to this and add the following that comes from listening to some people with MLB experience.

If a player's head (not just his body) is not screwed on "right", the best thing for the player to do is sit down, behind a closed door, with the manager (not the GM but with the guy who puts on the same uniform as the player) and say, "I'm all screwed up right now, I know it, you know it, so the best thing to do *for the team* is to keep me off the field". That's what should happen and actually does happen anywhere else besides the NYC fishbowl of major league sports. Girardi knows it; he also knows he handled this poorly. He and Jorge closed the door, talked it through, apologies were given and accepted and it's done. It's a blessing when the player is honest enough to do with with his manager - as opposed to the player who shows up with a broken wrist who says nothing and proceeds to play like crap and hurt his team's chances for a win.

Cashman seems to be stuggling with an anal rash of some sort and just can't seem to stop jumping out of his seat with stupid sound bites whenever someone from the fourth estate is around.

In the meantime, the Yankees look about as lost now as the Sox did last month. It is painful to watch ... but we did say that the first half would be pretty ugly, so here we are with the ugliness. Yikes !!!

Tim- Great and depressing point about Garcia and Colon. It can't last, can it?

The team's not hitting, period. Everything else is b.s. This team can contend if it can hit to its potential -- despite its weak pitching and despite any clubhouse problems.

When they don't hit, all their other flaws are revealed.

It's not just Posada. The only two guys hitting consistently are Granderson and Cano.

Just hit, baby.
