Interesting Take
Bob Klapisch posted this article the other day speculating that Andy Pettitte is going to retire because of the upcoming Roger Clemens trial.
It's an interesting theory and certainly worthy of consideration. Andy is going to have to admit to lying in his original statements about HGH when he is called to testify and he will have to confront his current/former friend Roger Clemens. If he is still an active player, he would then have to return and face the press in the clubhouse. As a private citizen he can certainly avoid a big chunk of that scrutiny.
Ultimately, we will probably never know the reasons, but it sounds like Andy Pettitte is finished. He hasn't started throwing which is a pretty big sign and he said the other day "I really don't want [the Yankees] to worry about me. I just want them to go, just go on." That sounds like a guy ready to hang it up to me and the Yankees had better wake up to that possibility.

Interesting article, perspective. I fully expect Clemens to take down anybody he can to build his case. Part of me hopes he finds a common ground with the feds and never gets to trial but I don't see his ego allowing that.
If that is the end on Pettitte, very nice career, lots of rings and lots of memories for Yankee fans and baseball fans.

I'm with you, but I think you are right about his ego. That plus the fact he is now facing serious jail time will ruin any chance of a settlement.
BTW- how was the cruise?

Peter - It was great. Despite logistics of managing 10 of us it went very well. Recharged the batteries and ready to go on a new season :)

Even if he comes back, his heart would not be in it. We don't want a Brett Favre situation -- where a guy plays one season too many.
Whether this year or next, the Yanks are going to have to transition away from Pettite and go to the next generation of pitchers. Might as well start now.
But please, oh Lord, don't let it be Mitre.

Amen to that Corey. If we see Mitre in the rotation, something is seriously wrong.

I think that if Andy retires, it will be because he's got $ in the bank and enough grey hairs to be entitled to do so. I would have thought the guy would go out on top - as a champ in 2K9 (taking a page from Moose going out a 20 game winner), but he came back 1 year too many.
Bob Klapisch is speculating because he had to fill some column inches and there wasn't anything else to write about.

I don't know if he came back 1 year too many. He had a pretty good 2010, except for the injury.

Tim - Andy pitched very well, but only for 129 innings.
I honestly hope the guy retires so that we can get on with the process of letting the team get younger.

Sure hope Sabathia is up to it next year because losing him for any amount of time doesn't bear thinking.

That has to be the worst case scenario for the 2011 Yankees. Can't see a way they survive that hit.
