Intermezzo

The Yankees survived Game 1, using the best of their pen and getting a very lucky hit off of Papelbon in the 10th.

Clearly, Girardi managed all out in Game 1, but what will he do in Game 2? It's not really about the lineup, the Yankees are using a pretty decent one, but what will they do when the game goes to the bullpen? Perhaps AJ Burnett makes it all moot with another one of his clunkers. But if the Yankees have a lead in the 7th, what will Joe do?

I was at the early game at Fenway. Peter. Like a friend of mine texted me - the Yankees beat the PawSox in the first game. Yeah, we'll take the win, but it wasn't anything to be too proud about.

So far in the second game? AJ may have a million dollar arm, but I question if he's even got a nickel head - may not even be worth 2 cents. Standing there with his back to the plate while a runner trots home? Ah jeez, AJ, try to pay attention during a game, OK?

Well, now we know the answer to your question. This game was one of the most frustrating of the whole season to watch, because sooner or later Ivan Nova was bound to give up a run.

Now, the question remains: now that Hughes and Nova both pitched in relief during the doubleheader, who starts the last game of the regular season?

Yeah Mitchell, I kept wondering who half those guys were. And it's amazing that after 161 games the Yankees in 2010 are exactly where they were in 2009- short a fourth starter.

Tyler-

I keep wondering at some point if Girardi is going to regret coddling his pitchers to the extent he did in 2010. I understand the need to protect their arms and their careers, but when Mitre trotted out there in the 7th I felt the same way you did. There is a happy medium and I think Joe didn't find it this season.
