Inexcusable
Joe Girardi just managed the Yankees out of first place by using only one of his good relievers after CC Sabathia pitched a gem.
I can't wait to hear the justification for going to Gaudin and then Mitre with Rivera, Robertson and Joba all sitting in the bullpen. Actually, there isn't any justification. None of them had pitched since Saturday and each of them should have gotten into this game before Mitre or Gaudin even saw the ball.
AGGGHHHHHH!
At least there is another game tomorrow night.

That he did, Peter.
What I ask myself is this - were we capable of scoring in this game - were there any bats willing to get it done? Didn't look like it. Facing a guy like Price who's got it going surely doesn't help, but A-Rod and Jeter are struggling, Cano has cooled as has Thames, Teix seems to have plateaued, Swisher and Gardner are dinged up and Granderson makes me want to watch Austin Jackson play. It may be time for Jeter to have one of his quiet conversations in the locker room with the entire team asking them if they want a ring or a rest. It's crunch time boys.

You know MItchell, probably not. But I did find it curious that they didn't have Kearns bunt in the 8th with Posada on first and no outs. And Gardner can't get caught stealing third in the 10th. And then they get the leadoff guy on in the 11th and get him to second, only for Curtis and Jeter to not get things done.
What I really wonder is how many of those unavailable pitchers would have been available if the wild card didn't exist?

Yeah, I agree, Peter: letting Kearns swing away was questionable and Gardner (surely acting on his own) screwed up - at least he owned up to it immediately.
Your last question is a great one. My guess is that every arm would have been available if there were no wild card. Girardi is probably looking to keep some arms fresh for the last few weeks.
Every team hitting stat has softened in the past month for us. I'm not sure that these guys have enough left in the tank to make it to the WS let alone repeat as champs. I'd love to be wrong, but hot teams win it all and we are anything but hot right now.
