Disaster Averted
What just happened? Did we just see the Yankees blow a 6-0 lead, fall behind 7-6, tie the game up, go ahead 8-7 and then win on a boneheaded baserunning play by Carl Crawford? Can we all start breathing again now?
The bottom line is the Yankees got a win they desperately needed. After taking that lead, losing this game would have been a crushing blow. Instead, they won, they are back in first (not really since they are tied in the loss column) and they have a chance to walk out of Tampa with a series win.
That's enough for now. Let's all just enjoy this and save the analysis for tomorrow.

That was an absolutely amazing throw from Golson, and A-Rod didn't even blink on the short hop and fast tag. I LOVED it ! Gardner 2 nights ago, Crawford last night, we're all evened up in the baserunning mistakes category for this series.
Nova looks like a great candidate for the bullpen, maybe an inning or three as his limit. And he needs to be reminded to check baserunners, even guys standing on first. Young kid, plays like one sometimes but that can be fixed as long as he's willing to listen and learn. There seems to be some discussion right now about him - either he's tiring or losing focus or repeating a too-short pitch selection pattern - but he's consistently getting shelled after 50 or so pitches and/or the four or fifth inning. Good stuff, good command, great composure - I'd keep him around the bigs and teach him.
Girardi? I don't know if I would have stayed with Nova as long as he did. Sometimes JG seems to pull too early, sometimes he seems to pull too late. I guess it goes back to your earlier post Peter - about trust. JG doesn't trust Javy, at all - and it seems like he's trying to trust Nova right now. Either way, I don't envy the decisions that Girardi has to make under the bright lights of the NY media frenzy - and crazy fans like me :-).

It's still a little concerning that it came down to Crawford's stupid decision making (esp if you believe the chatter about him being a yank next year!). However, a win is a win and it may be the spark they needed to get out of their funk.
I will say this... while there was ABSOLUTELY NO REASON to tag 3rd on the 2nd out, over the last few years we have not exactly been known as a team who guns down runners from the outside. Even on that play it took a perfect throw.
