That Was Weird

In the end, the Yankees didn't get Cliff Lee.  You have to wonder if some of the reports that the Mariners took their offer and shopped it are true.  On the heels of last year's failed Washburn negotiations, it might be a long, long time before you see the Mariners and Yankees complete a deal.

I still think that trade would have been a slam dunk, but luckily the rotation is not the Yankees weakness.  They didn't need Lee in the way that other teams did.  Where Lee could haunt them is in the playoffs and Texas will present a challenge with Lee and CJ Wilson, both lefties at the top of the rotation.

That's a worry for the future, for now the needs are the same they were this morning.  Figure out how to solidify the bullpen and find a bat that can offer some positional flexibility.

Peter, after reading the following article, I think it's just a matter of a good contract in November before Lee gets to hang with his buddy (CC) in the Yankee rotation. It would be a nice way to replace Andy as he ridesoff in the sunset.

Mitchell and Peter,

I thought I read last winter that Lee was looking for a contract like Sabathia's. However, Sabathia turns 30 this month whereas Lee turns 32 next month. It was risky enough signing Sabathia (or any pitcher) to a 7-year contract when he was 28. Do you think the Yankees should sign Lee to a 7-year contract at the age of 32? I want to add Lee to the rotation as much as you guys, but not if it means handing out another contract like Sabathia's. What so you think?

Unless he wants a 6-year deal, I think you are right.

But do you really think Andy will ride off into the sunset if he keeps pitching like this?

If Andy keeps pitching like this? Nah, he will be having too much fun to retire - but I think that he's got to know that this is pretty magical stuff right now. In October, he will start to reflect and feel the tug of his family again. We'll see, I guess.

I'm curious to see what sort of a package Cashman puts in front of Lee - years and dollars.

I'm also curious to see just what they're willing to do with Mo, Posada and Jeter in terms of years and dollars. But I'll wait for you to start another thread before I wander into those topics. :-)

Another thread on the way....
