Let The Tryouts Begin!

Well, well, the Yankees made a move today recalling Juan Miranda and sending Kevin Russo down.  Miranda is going to start at DH tonight and bat 8th.

It makes a ton of sense to give Miranda a crack at the role of lefty DH.  As I have mentioned before, the Yankees can comfortably DH Posada when they face a lefty or use Thames, but their options against righties were really only Colin Curtis.  If Miranda can hit righties, the Yankees might not need to make a trade to bolster the bench.  I would suspect that this is the first move of two, the second being the recall of Nunez from Scranton as the Yankees look internally before looking externally.

I know this is changing the subject but it might not have been seen if I posted down in the Sheppard post below.

I've read both sides of people commenting on the players missing Sheppard's funeral. Most of the players have no connection at all or very minimal to the Yankee announcer. Some, Jeter, Posada, Rivera, Pettitte and a few others do though. There are all kinds of apologists saying there are many ways to honor somebody. I get that, but there is the right thing to do too. I think those four players should have been there. Playing that long for the organization makes it the right thing to do.

BL,

That was my first thought when I first read it about it. Especially Jeter, who had Sheppard record his announcement for him to play every time he comes to bat at the Stadium. I was a little disappointed to read that none of the "core" players showed up.

I heard tonight that Jeter wasn't aware of the funeral being yesterday.

I wish some of them had been there, but I think it truly was a case of bad timing. The players were scattered all over the country the past few days and they probably didn't know when the funeral was.

I heard the same thing Peter, but with the organization how did they not hear? I'm not suggesting they did hear and blew it off, I'm asking how did communication break down so none of them heard or knew of the arrangements?

BL-

I think you had an unfortunate combination of events. With the players scattered for the ASG and break, the only way they would find out about a funeral is if someone from the organization called them.

But, Tuesday morning Steinbrenner dies and I have a feeling most organizational people then had to switch into overdrive to plan last night's memorial and other issues and it probably feel through the cracks.

If the Yankees had played a game between Sunday and Thursday I bet it would have been posted in the clubhouse. I don't know why the NY press is fanning the flames on this one. I wonder how many of them attended the funeral?
