Baseball On The Boardwalk

While the Cliff Lee madness was in full swing last night, I headed down to Coney island to check out the new amusement park, Luna Park, and the Brooklyn Cyclones.  If you are in the NYC area, I definitely recommend both.

Luna Park is in the space where the rundown rides used to be between the The Cyclone and Dino's.  They have totally refurbished it and put about 18 rides into that strip.  They have some kiddie rides and some pretty good adult ones too.   They are a bit pricey on an individual basis, but for $26 you can purchase a 4-hour bracelet that allows you to ride as often as you like.  Surprisingly on a Friday Afternoon at 5pm, the park wasn't overrun with people.  It was "comfortably crowded" but the lines were no more than 10 minutes for a ride. Of course when you tire of rides you can head up to the Boardwalk for some of the best people watching ever.  It's also a great spot to grab an adult beverage and clam roll and enjoy the breeze off the ocean on a hot day.

We then headed down to the Cyclones Park, MCU Stadium, right under the Parachute Jump.  It's a great setting for a game, with the ocean over the outfield wall and most of the seats in the shade.  The ballpark features some very good BBQ items and of course you can get a Nathan's or a Knish.  And there are plenty of Brooklyn Brewery beers available to consume.  Parking is $5 and tickets behind home plate were $16.  After the game on Friday night's they have a fireworks show.  It was a pretty good one, about 15 minutes and a lot of fireworks.

All in all, a pretty great way to spend a Friday night.

Sounds nice - I miss that place, it was home. It was pretty "funky" there for a long while, not a place I wanted to take the wife and kids - great to know they finished cleaning it up.

BTW, pick up a copy of Sixty Feet, Six Inches. Bob Gibson and Reggie Jackson just talking about how the game is played - some great insights.

Yay! I already want to go again!

Parting comment before I shut it down for the evening. Javy throws a beautiful game and works his way out of a jam even when he's running on fumes in the 7th.

Joba blows all of Javy's hard work away by getting himself into trouble and then having the bases cleared with the slam. Joba simply doens't have what it takes to be the 8th inning guy for us right now. And the answer is NOT Hughes going back to the bullpen either. Park and Joba: Cashman and Girardi have some issues to deal with in the next few weeks.

At some point don't they have to stop moving Joba back and forth?

Is he a #2 type starter someday?

Is he the closer?

Make a decision and let him get in a groove that will last.

I don't like talent wasted even if I don't like the talent. :)

BL, it's not about moving Joba back and forth; he's our 8th inning guy, that's his assigned groove - and he's doing a miserable job at it often enough to be a problem that needs to be solved. If they move him anywhere, it needs to be to Scranton to get his head screwed back on - not back to the starting rotation in the Bronx.

Time for Albe to get back to The Bronx. Also time for Cashman to rent a bullpen arm so we don't have to watch CH Park.

The only real problem I see is that if Joba gets sent down, there won't be anyone to play with Youk's emotions when we face you guys. ;-)

we solved that one for you Mitchell, we've got Ellsbury to mess with Youk's emotions...and the all-star voters

Joba is not doing the job. I don't think he should be demoted to Triple A, but he's not the guy to go to with the game on the line. I'd make Robertson the 8th inning guy until Joba can straighten it out.

Come September or October I like the idea of using Hughes in relief. He's someone who can go 1, 2, 3 innings -- so you would only see two relievers in a key October game: Hughes and Rivera.

Starters have been converted to the October bullpen with some success. The A's did it with Vida Blue; and more recently the Marlins did it with Dontrelle Willis.

The alternative is to shift Vazquez to bullpen duty. But that brings back awful memories of 2004. I think Vazquez is the fourth starter in October.

p.s.: The above may be a moot point if the Rays and Red Sox keep playing well. Don't like the idea of critical starts in September being taken by Mitre or Gaudin.

I don't know Corey, Hughes in the pen and AJ starting in the playoffs? Not sure I would sign up for that one.....

A.J. has the best pure stuff on the whole staff. I can't believe he won't come around -- he sure looked good last time out.

I don't think A.J. would do well in the bullpen given his mental makeup (or lack thereof); nor would Vazquez. The one starter who has proven his effectiveness in the bullpen is Hughes, so he's the most logical candidate. There is also the matter of the idiotic innings limitation -- if the Yanks are going to limit his innings, I'd just as soon see him go to the bullpen.
