Huffman On The Way
Piecing together reports from the Daily News, Journal News and Scranton Times Tribune it sounds like Marcus Thames is headed to the DL and Chad Huffman is on his way to New York.
Huffman is an interesting player. He is not considered a very good defender and he is not very fast, but he has shown the ability to hit lefty pitching and he can play first and left. In short, he sounds remarkably like a younger version of Marcus Thames. Throw in the fact that Thames is 11-for-58 since the end of April and you could make the case that this is an upgrade.
What I find interesting is that the Yankees passed over Golson this time. Yes, Thames' role was essentially DH against LHP, but with three catchers and Russo on the roster, the Yankees would seem to have that particular need covered already. What they don't have is a guy who can come off the bench and play good defense in the outfield or steal a base (assuming Gardner is in left and not on the bench). I know Golson can't hit (hideous .295 OBP in AAA right now) but he can run and play D. Wouldn't that be more valuable to this current team?
Just a guess, but I think another move is on the way, perhaps something to address the three catchers on the big league roster?

I think we're a little "thin" right now in position players and the trade deadline is coming - time to find a rental or two. Nick Johnson is missing, we have three catchers, Thames is a bit of a disappointment and teams like the Os and Indians are going to be sellers. Yep, time for Cashman to go shopping.
