Randy Winn?

Joel Sherman is reporting that the Yankees have signed Randy Winn to a one-year deal.  This is a move I don't get at all unless there is another move coming.  Yes, Winn is right handed and he can play all three outfield spots, but he is coming off a year when he hit .262/.318/.353 and put up a .384 OPS against LHP.

We don't have contract information yet and that will really determine if this deal was good or bad.  If they added Winn for very little money to play a bench role, that's great.  Otherwise.....

UPDATE: Sherman is saying that Winn got about $2 million and the Yankees valued him more than Reed Johnson.  That doesn't make a lot of sense to me.  Also, that means this signing is the last move the Yankees will probably make this offseason and if so, it's kind of like finishing a great dinner with a $2 cigar.

Winns a better hitter in general and especially against lefties than he showed in 2009. Even just a year prior he put up 289/343/470 against lefties 166 AB's. He's also a very good defender. He wouldn't be my first choice, but Im fine with it. How many days till pitchers and catcher report is it again?

Winn is clearly just a 1 year rental on a low budget deal. As Ian points out, he may not be as bad as last year's numbers - at least he can reach the cutoff man without having to bounce it on the way in.

And this confirms that Cash really was working within a budget - and finally puts the Damon angst aside.:-)

Fair points guys and if Winn bounces back to his 2008 numbers it is a solid move. But while defensively he will provide very good value his addition means that right now the bench is Cervelli, Pena and Winn. One more spot is open and I hope the Yankees find a way to fill it with someone with a little oomph in his bat.

Peter - Rumor has it that there's a kid named Montero who swings a big bat that might be available. Or maybe Miranda - who has also been known to thump it every once in a while. My guess is that Montero at least gets a look-see in spring training.

I don't think Montero will be brought up to ride the pine. Now, if (when?) Johnson gets hurt for 50 games, I could see him get the call.

I wonder if the Yankees would try and see if Montero could play a corner outfield spot this spring? If he could do that, then I think he could definitely stick in the bigs.

where does hoffman go? Peter..

BWP- all depends on how many pitchers the Yankees carry. If they "only" carry 11, Hoffman probably makes it (assuming he has a better spring than Golson) If they carry 12 pitchers, that leaves four bench spots. We know Cervelli and the non starter between Gardner and Winn are 2 spots and figure at least one spot for a reserve infielder.

Who gets the last spot? Could be Hoffman, could be someone like Kevin Russo, I think it is wide open until we see everyone in camp.

(BTW- good to hear from you again)

I think my favorite part of baseball is seeing the young kids come up and compete for a roster spot. Should be a fun spring!
