A Good Read On Damon
As Johnny Damon remains a hot topic, I found this article about why teams are wary of signing him a good read.
It basically argues that he is indeed a DH at this point, something that those of us who watched him play this season can hardly disagree with. I have said it before and I will say it again, before the Yankees signed Nick Johnson, bringing Damon back made a lot of sense. Now that they have closed the DH spot, Damon is a less than ideal fit for this team, but we will have to listen to talk about him until he signs somewhere.
UPDATE: Nady will not be coming back to NY.

If the Yanks can get him for $5 million/1 year, which is reportedly the offer they made, I say go for it! For that price, if we have to designate Johnson as a pinch hitter/platoon player that's not such a bad thing, especially a guy with his OBP. I think Damon might be an important part of that locker room, being an experienced vet with an outgoing personality.

I'm disappointed that Nady is not coming back. And I'm not sure why the Yanks could not outbid the A's for a one year deal with Sheets.
This is a good team. But they are going to score less runs than the 2009 edition, and the Red Sox might have the better pitching staff.
I get the nagging feeling that Hal Steinbrenner is being penny wise and pound foolish. When this team's flaws start to show in the first half of the new season, they'll panic and spend a lot more money (and prospects) on rentals trying to fix the problems. Blowing some money now on Sheets or Lackey would have been far smarter -- and it's hard to understand not spending a relatively small amount of money on the likes of Nady or Matsui.

Evan, if we sign Damon for $5 mill, we are spending $10 million or so on a DH that takes up two spots on the 25 man roster.
If I were voting, I'd vote to hold onto the $5 mill and use it to sign a $10 mill rent-a-player on July 31 and pay him $5 mill for the remaining 6 mos of the year.

That's true Mitchell, but Johnson is already an injury risk, and I think the yankees need to be prepared for him not working out. Nady would have been an excellent option in my opinion, and then we could have forgotten about Damon. Unfortunately that ship has passed, as with matsui, and as it stands I think we need another bat. I know the Yanks are being more money conscious, but for 5 mil it wouldn't be a catastrophe if they had to cut him mid season to go for that rent-a-player.
