Andy Says No (For Now)

The Post is reporting that Andy Pettitte rejected a one-year/$10 million offer from the Yankees.  But, ESPN is reporting he will pitch in 2010 and it is a matter of "working out a deal with the Yankees."

That's a pretty good offer he rejected, but I think the Yankees would go a bit higher,  He made about $10.5 million last year with the incentives, so I could see the Yankees going up to $12 million.  We shall see.

There are too many positives to him being back in the Bronx for the deal to not happen. It's another year with a known, clutch veteran pitcher who "gets" being a Yankee. He will be back - and once he's signed then Cashman can start to finagle with other matters.

$118m for his career...I tire of ALL athletes holding out for the extra million or so.

I get market value, I get the union encouraging it, I also get it up the a$$ in the cost of going to games.

Mitchell- yup

BL- It always makes me laugh how a lot of these guys protest that it's not about the money and how their family is the deciding factor, etc.. It's always all about the money.

My guess: I think that after a certain point, it's not about the actual dollars but about competing for who got MORE money than so&so or whatsizface.

These guys compete about EVERYTHING, from wives or girlfriends to length and cost of contract. Pride of the deal factors in.

:-)

You're right, Rivera certainly felt strongly about being the highest paid closer and I remember when Mussina came back in 2007 he specifically said he would not take less than Carl Pavano. (And in that instance I can't blame him)
