Mauer Matters

The Twins are trying to get local boy, Joe Mauer, to agree to a contract extension and their success or failure will have a big impact on the Yankees' offseason.

If Mauer doesn't agree to an extension he will become a free agent after 2010, and considering he is a catcher and only 27, he will be looking at a monster contract.  Obviously, the Yankees would be one of the favorites to sign him in this scenario.  Knowing this, New York could gamble and put their best prospect, Jesus Montero into trade proposals if they thought they could sign Mauer after the 2010 season.  I know people are a bit down on Joba, but imagine what a package with Joba and Montero in it could fetch. But, if Mauer stays in Minnesota (and I think he will) the Yankees need to have internal options to play catcher and therefore must hang onto Montero.

I read today that the Twins hope to have these talks concluded by Christmas, so we should have an answer by then.  Whatever happens, the Yankees will definitely be watching.

I can guarantee you that Mauer stays with the Twins. It's possible that Mauer will have some player options to leave if the Twins don't carry through on their commitment to surround him with a winning team. So maybe in 5 or 6 years if the team is a dog, Mauer jumps ship. But just forget about signing him right now.

Here's my view of prospects: if they turn out to be as good as Melky Cabrera or Horace Clarke, then you're lucky. Most of them are a bust. You never know who's going to be any damn good. If the Yanks want Halladay, and if they want to keep him off the Red Sox, they are going to have to deal top tier prospects and players.

I agree on Mauer Corey, I just don't see why he would leave home if the Twins make even a competitive offer.

As for prospects, I wouldn't trade Montero right now. Any of the other guys I could, but not Montero. He's my untouchable and I usually don't have those.

Peter i agree never trade montero, hows this sign lackey, trade for halladay.. hmmm sounds like the Os of old. 4 ,20 game winners.. ????ahh maybe 3... but i would not trade for halladay , jump in raise the bar for sox and get out..not worth all the talent and $s.. get a big bat to go behind alex..he needs a high average guy protecting him..

BWP- Signing Lackey is my move too- as long as he costs less than AJ. And, driving up the Red Sox's price is always a good thing!

looks like AJ money will get him, for anyone who will offer it, #2 starter $s, how long a contract is the hurdle, i can't see cashman giving up what he built for one player, even Doc, Hey he could still wind up in Philly, Happ plus what jays wanted last year..
