Just In Time
It may sound overly dramatic, but I think the Yankees would have lost this series if they had lost tonight. They may still lose it, but think about it, they were up 2-0, 4-2 and then they were tied 4-4 with two outs in the ninth. The Phillies were going to bring up Rollins and Victorino in the ninth and things looked bleak. But, they pulled it out thanks to A-Rod, Damon, Posada and Mo.
Start with Damon. What a great AB to reach base and then that was an absolutely brilliant play to take the extra base off the steal. With the shift on, Damon knew third was open and when the throw went to the right of second, he took off. Great play and one that may have changed the whole inning. With a runner on third Lidge has to be careful with things in the dirt. Is that why he hit Teixeira or left a fastball over the plate to A-Rod? I can't prove it, but I imagine it helped.
A-Rod, can't say enough about his 2009 postseason and that hit was just a continuation of the trend. He won't ever have to worry about being called a choker again and you can tell that for the first time since he joined the Yankees he fits in.
Posada- that double made things academic.
Mo- If Ernest Hemingway was alive today, he would write about Rivera and not DiMaggio. Lidge's failure tonight just shows you once again how great he is.
Now we head to Game 5 with a chance for 27. Lee is going to be very tough, but the Yankees may have caught an odd break already today. Melky left the game limping, which probably means Gardner starts in center tomorrow. His game is much more suited to grinding out a run and I think that could benefit New York.
And yes, this makes up for the Eagles destroying the Giants earlier today. It makes up for it ten-fold.

Wow !!! What an incredible game, what a way to pull it out in the 9th. Couldn't agree with you more about those guys, Peter. And Mo coming in and just shutting it down, completely w/out drama. Wow !!!
I will bet that the Yankees spend *hours* on Monday watching videos of Lee's performance against them; I suspect - and hope - it will be a more than a little different in game 5 facing Lee.
Jints looked awful - they are too dinged up on D to hang with the best teams right now. But, yep, if I had to give one away to Philly today, I'm OK that it was the Jints.

Monday should be a game to regroup , girardi I hope will wake up in the morning and think about this, burnett at home on full rest where he is twice as good compared to the road, matching him up on a very hot pitcher, could waste a good effort by AJ...no posada, no melky, no matsui, AJ hits...we have a rested pen if gaudin can keep the game close, a day off tuesday, if it were AJ verses a fourth or fifth starter, give it a shot to steal the series, but not vs Lee, girardi seems to panic at the wrong times, like using MO in april for more than one inn. Manuel made a hugh blunder not starting lee down a game at home..to me that was a yankee fans dream,, monday he should have went with happ, huge break again for us..to me i don't mind going home up three games to two, with a full squad AJ and if needed CC.. pettite also can be used in those games . I hope he has a DREAM , and this all comes to him.. Would it be pedro vs AJ on Wed.? let him bring his 88 mph batting practice fastball this time around, i think he gets banged around. I like to hear some opinions, thank you.. P.S does girardi wear # 28 next year????

That was amazing. Watching those Phillies fans deflate in the 9th was insane.

BWP- I think you make a good case and part of me agrees with you. Starting Gaudin tonight is the safe thing to do. But you could also look at it this way- who is Philly going to start in Games 6+7? Pedro and Hamels would be my guess, maybe Happ. Either way, you have to think the Yankees have the advantage in the pitching matchups with Pettitte and CC even on short rest. So, give it to AJ tonight and hope you win. If it doesn't work you are still in very good shape.
And, I hope that Girardi leaves his number at 27. It's funny you mention that because I was wondering the same thing. I think changing it every year is tacky, but hopefully we find out his intentions later tonight.

No question that they have to start Burnet. He's got a history of being able to pitch on short rest; lots of days off this month; this is the World Series. Tell Gibson, Lolich, Schilling, Johnson, and Beckett that they can't pitch on short rest.
BUT: You've got to hit Posada instead of Molina. Without Matsui and with Texeira and Cano hitting like Mickey Mouse, you can't afford Molina.
One over-the-top move I would consider is sitting Cano. He's sulking -- it's even affecting his defense. How about a swift kick in the pants? Start Hairston at second until Lee leaves the game. Then bring in Cano. That will get his head of his butt.

Thank you for the input Peter, your right about our match ups vs those three ,throw in blanton also.. the only guy their is happ that can give some innings and keep the game close.. at the stadium pedro will not do that again, blanton maybe three inns. hamels you won't see until next year if they don't trade him..we scored 15 runs in the last 2 games and it dose not feel like it.. I think they will punish any one at the stadium... what would be awesome and truly the way to top off this season would be to light up Lee tonight..that would be the ! point on the season.. Peter you are a traditional guy like I am , If I may assume, as yankee fans we frowned on guys on other teams show boating doing all that silly stuff on the field ,all these crazy high five hand shakes ,pie in the face, stuff, this year has been a dramatic change the way the team went about its business, I have gotten use to it, when you are winning all is good, i agree with you position on tacky, girardis point was to win # 27, if he don't change to 28, whats his message ..LOL..he is now on the spot to make another WS # his goal , I put aside Melky , Cano , Swisher, et. al jumping around, look at Arod he is so loose and the biggest kid on the field after a walk off.. this year they played the game like kids and the formula was unbeatable , well one more too go.. yes ,i do remember 04. so I have yielded to silly stuff if it made these men play like kids and win big and have loads of fun.. Through out the year i knocked swisher , i was wrong, because of my approach to the game. the guy is a goof ball, but now he is our goof ball.. i stand corrected.. Go Yanks

I dont see the huge gamble in starting Burnett on 3 days rest. Maybe we are all conditioned to over react when a pitcher is asked to go on short rest, but remember for many decades short rest was defined as 2 days rest and 3 days rest was normal. Burnetts numbers on short rest are superb and either way its his last start before 3 months of rest, why give a game away when you can end it tonight? Dont forget, Burnett nearly threw a complete game shutout last year against the Yankees on short rest. Put the best pitcher available on the mound and lets go step on the Phillies throat instead of giving them life.

It certainly worked for Swisher and I would do it, provided Posada is in the lineup tonight. I don't know what Cano's problem is, my eyes are telling me his defense is not as good right now either. If this series was 3-1 the other way Cano would be getting fitted for goat horns along with Teixeira.

Well guys, their was no reason to pitch this guy tonight, history of decades ago, and what AJ did on 3 days rest last year was not after the season when you have a full year of innings in your arm is so different.. also he pitches great at home, a pure panic move again by girardi ,, remember torre in 04 we were up 18 to what 4 in game three , he sends out guys to shut bosox down , that was a big why... look what happened then tired arms... but this is just my opinion... now we go back home with another guy on three day rest.. we better score 8 to 10 runs WED. or its back to another guy on 3 days rest in NOV... tough to watch.. even tougher to blow the momentum and series.. so much for the rested pen..
