Strange Move
I am a little bit baffled by the Yankees' decision to replace Hinske on the roster with Guzman. Fast Freddy is a Herb Washington clone, all run and no hit. A stolen base can be important, but Guzman seems to me the kind of luxury you afford yourself if you only carry 10 pitchers. With 11 pitchers, you now have a bench (most nights) of Gardner, Molina, Hairston, Cervelli and Guzman. If you needed to pinch hit, who do you select? Probably Gardner, but wouldn't you feel better with Hinske on the bench? I imagine the Yankees will go back to Hinske if they make the World Series, but this is a curious choice.
As for tonight, it's all about the weather. Yesterday was one of the more miserable days I can remember aroudn here. Today seems much drier, but the weather folks are predicting doom. Assuming it is as bad as they say, how about the Yankees try something different? How about warming up Sabathia and Gaudin? If the game starts and it is pouring, put Gaudin in until the rain delay. You could always pull him if the weather gets better. It's a risky move, but Girardi has done it before. The worst case result is pitching Sabathia for two innings and then having to sit through a two-hour delay that knocks him out of the game.
One thing you won't see at the Stadium tonight is Ronan Tynan. I have stopped trying to figure out how people do stupid things like this, but if the person who his comments were directed to accepts his apology (she did) I hope we all can move on quickly.
Comments
Guzman/Hinske - I had a hunch that Girardi was leaning that way. He really seems to feel the need for speed when playing the Angels. It seemed to work for him last series so he's apparently going to use the same approach again. Hope it works out for us.
And Marte, not Bruney? Girardi seemingly finds a formula and sticks with it until he's faced with an urgent need to change it.
Three catchers? Yep, that's the formula ...

Observations?
Damon seems to have gotten his swing back. CC is an ace even in the post-season. Mo is still Mo. A-Rod still has it going as does Jeter. Swisher is trying too hard. Matsui will come to life one of these games as will Cano. Californians don't seem to like the cold.
