Perfect Storm

Being from the North Shore of Boston, I think I can legitimately compare the Red Sox past week with the Perfect Storm made famous by, the storm itself (eventually), then the book, then the movie about a crew out of Gloucester (or 'Glawstah' as it is properbly pronounced).

The storm was basically a confluence of circumstances perfectly timed and aligned to create a catastrophic or "perfect" storm.

Leading up to the 2-game set in Tampa Bay, the Red Sox were beset by injury and ineffectiveness.  These kinds of things happen all of the time to good teams and bad, but for the Red Sox, it couldn't have come at a worse moment as they faced their 2 biggest opponents on foreign turf, for 6 straight games.

In addition, John Smoltz, once thought of as a decent enough gamble, was putting the finishing touches on the worst string of starts in his professional (and probably amateur, little league, video game) baseball career.

While I saw only 2 of the games, the bookends, I followed the middle 4 fairly closely on-line.  It just felt like the Red Sox had no chance.  The energy had been sucked out of the team and the fan-base.  I had no expectations of the Red Sox winning a single game in New York.  It just didn't seem possible.  Everything was going wrong.

Regardless, of why or how, the Red Sox returned home yesterday and promptly regained a game on the Yankees.  Jason Bay hit a home run (someone told him he was allowed to hit home runs), the offense got the opponent starter out of the game after 4 innings and 104 pitches and even Brad Penny put up a quality start.

I hope this is the point where Boston can eventually look back and say, 'wow, those 6 games in Tampa and New York sure were tough, but we quickly re-established our footing.'  There's too much talent for this team to just fold up and go away.

As for tonight, Junichi Tazawa makes his starting debut tonight.  He has come up very quickly thus far posting:  2.57 ERA in 98 IP for Portland and 2.38 ERA in 11.1 IP at Pawtucket.  But the Tigers are a good team and after making his debut in the 15th inning Friday night against the Yankees in the New Yankee Stadium, it'll be interesting to see how Tazawa performs.

"There's too much talent for this team to just fold up and go away."

Yet, had it been the Yankees in the same sorry position the Sox are in right now it would've been...

"The Yankees have no clutch hitters, their rotation is in flux and Rivera is in a decline so I don't see the Yankees making the playoffs for the second consecutive year"

The pilots who rescued that sailboat train right down the road from where we spend August. Saw them training on the beach the other day, they are absolutely amazing.

Faiaz,

New to reading the site? New to dealing with people?

Do me a favor and find somewhere on this site where I have ever thought of the Yankees the way you just suggested.

When you do, let us know. Until then, keep on posting like you don't like anyone.

Andy,

Sorry, I didn't know I had to break things down like you are a two year old. I'm generalizing the voice of Redsox fans.

-Faiaz

Faiaz,

That's kind of what I expected from you. No analysis, no thought provoking insight, no substance, just another slam. You called me a 2-year old. Seriously, that is weak.

Feel free to add something to the conversation, otherwise, go to ESPN and drop your comments there.

-Andy

Uh oh, things are getting spicy at yankeesredsox.com! Faiaz, this isn't that sort of site, you're better off at espn with that nonsense.

As for the Sox game last night, what in the world is Youks problem? I mean, pretty obvious Porcello wasnt trying to hit him, and then to charge the mound and throw his helmet? Sorry, but he acted like a damn fool and he deserved the body slam he received from Porcello.

overall frustration lately with the losing etc. plus he has been hit a few times in the past week.

I didn't see it (started watching game right after that) but will check it out in the highlights.

I always preferred the guys that weren't good fighters, you know, guys like Bill Lee.

Every big league pitcher should watch the Nolan Ryan-Robin Ventura fight. That's the way to keep them from charging the mound.

I could have handle my exchange with Faiaz a bit better, for that I am sorry.

Peter, that Ventura/Ryan fight was one of the best baseball fights ever. I have to say that Ventura seemed to literally put his head into Ryan's headlock. It was almost on purpose.

Ian, of course I am probably biased here, but I do think Porcello meant to hit him. Here is the evidence:

Porcello had hit one player all season prior to last night. Who was that player? Youkilis.

In the bottom of the 1st, he threw a pitch at Victor Martinez that came close to hitting him in the chest, Martinez gave him the "what the heck" gesture, but no fireworks. Martinez stuck out to end the inning. The very next batter Porcello faces, Youkilis, he hits between the numbers.

The Red Sox aren't necessary blameless here as Tazawa hit Cabrera (2nd time in 2 games Cabrera has been hit by a Red Sox) and it ultimately forced Cabrera out of the game (after the brawl).

Let's put it this way, if Porcello wasn't trying to hit Youkilis, well then he was just unusually wild and was dealt an unfortunate break.

Where's Kyle Farnsworth when a team needs him?

And Andy, am I correct in saying that either you or Peter had to review Faiaz's post before it got posted?

Hi Mitchell, yes his post was reviewed, but posted without a change/edit by me.

All he'd need to do would be to sign-up for a typekey and the review process would be eliminated.

-Andy

Thanks Andy. I wasn't, not even for a moment, thinking that his post would be changed or edited by you ...

Where did that sailboat comment come from?

Yeah, after seeing the game again, I guess Porcello may have intended to hit Youk after all, but maybe not.

Either way, to charge after a 20 year old rookie who has his hands up in disbelief is pretty lame in my opinion. That he got thrown on his back must have been embarrassing, sort of an instant karma sorta thing.

The movie/book "The Perfect Storm"

Hi Mitchell, please accept my apologies, I know you weren't suggesting anything of the sort.

I only said that b/c I didn't want anyone to think I had to delete out any inappropriate language, etc. His comments on this post have been 100% clean.
