A Statement

Somehow I don't think anyone will wake up tomorrow concerned about the fact that the Red Sox hold an 8-4 season series lead over the Yankees.

You can't ask for much more from a team than what the Yankees showed this weekend.  They delivered a message to their biggest rival and built a 6-1/2 game lead in the division in the process.  If you want to find fault, I can think of two things.

1- Joba was terrible on Thursday.  The Yankees need to figure out why.

2- Girardi didn't use Hughes with a 1-0 lead tonight.  Someone in the press needs to figure that out.

I tweeted this stat earlier, but it is worth repeating.  Since A-Rod came off the DL the Yankees are 56-27.  I am not saying that is all because of A-Rod, but he deserves a lot of credit.  I wrote about this three months ago.  It's too early to write the final chapter, but A-Rod's 2009 is shaping up to be something worth talking about.

UPDATE: Very interesting excahnge between Girardi and Pete Abe in the press conference.  Pete asked him why Hughes wasn't available and Girardi answered that he pitched the last two nights and he is thinking about his "career" and not "one game".  He went on to say that he hates to use any pitcher three nights in a row.

One of the things you have to give Girardi credit for as manager is the way he has developed bullpen arms.  Hard to argue with him here because Hughes' career is much more important than a 4-1/2 versus 6-1/2 game lead.

Peter , girardi is torre, they burn certain pitchers, they ride the hot arm until they melt it off. we had robertson , bruney , if we didn't send down melancon , why carry mitre and SD kid? one should be the starter and i think we seen all we need to from mitre.

Coke's numbers tell a very "interesting" story: high ERA (4.98) with a low WHIP (1.17) across 47 innings. In other words, he gives up the big hit - I had to get up off the couch and stand to watch the game when he came in. Whew !!!

By the way, Girardi needs to let A-Rod sit out a game or two now, not even DHing.

A sweet sweep, very sweet.

Peter, not only did they send a message this past week, they did it against Buehrle, Halladay, Beckett and Lester. Doesn't get much better; I hope they don't let up against Toronto.

BWP, couldn't disagree more. Girardi has his share of faults, but by and large I think his ability to manage the bullpen is one of his better qualities. Torre, on the other hand, was pretty awful when it came to getting production from the pen. I think Sturtze, Gordan, Quantril and Proctor etc would back me up on that :P

You agree on torre thats good, but a pattern has not been evident with girardi? just before aceves went down tired arm ,now back. he started streching aceves, hughes, coke, and of coarse mo, stating with him in april again. he must trust the rest of the guys in the pen even at the cost of a game or two ,why did he not go to bruney or robertson last night? he KNEW going in hughes and aceves were not pitching last night? why send down melancon, MY Opinion the kid is great and needs to pitch, those three are K pitchers, 95 and up? coke gave up the HR but jacoby and out. when torre showed up in LA, proctor put more insurace on his arm and set up trauma sessions with his therapist. thanks for the input Peter

Sox get tigers 4 games then texas 3 games, they must win five of seven, a small break rays fight angles today.. we can sit back and smoke a big cigar this week yankee fans..maybe girardi will rest the pen , keep hughes aceves Mo out another day or two..he must trust other arms

Ian

That's a great point, they have beaten quality pitchers which is very encouraging when you think about the future.

I agree about Ian's point on beating aces. That's been my biggest gripe all year that they have stuggled against ace starters for the most part. To face four in roughly a week, including Halladay, and win each of those games is a good sign that they're maybe toughening up. Oh...and two of those, including Halladay were on the road. Even better. Especially since it had been several years since they beat Halladay in Toronto.
