What Does Brett Tomko Have On Brian Cashman?

How do you explain the Yankees' decision to send Albie to the minors and keep Tomko?  Now both players have ERA's around 5.  But, since Albie was recalled he has pitched four scoreless with four K's.  Tomko is 36, Albie is 26.  One of them might still have some potential.  The other one doesn't and is on the decline phase of his career.

Chalk me up as clueless on this one.  I guess the Yankees just love Brett Tomko.

I absolutely don't get it either Peter. Maybe its the same way you justify throwing Joba out there every five days just to watch his ERA rise. Something is wrong there. No ... wait, lemme try out some Girardi verbiage: "we need to get Joba 'right' and the best way to do that is to throw him out there every 5 starts to work things out".

Kid is a dominant reliever - but a high pitch count, high WHIP starter who shakes off too many pitches and looks like a deer in the headlights. Maybe Joba is the long reliever as his range seems to top out at 3 or 4 innings.

- end of rant.

Let's just say that Melky wasn't giving up in that at bat ... awesome!

Seriously, I don't know. How does J.A. get sent down and Tomko stay. There must be incriminating photographs somewhere.

More rants -

Girardi defends Joba as being too young to be consistent. OK, but was Joba older last year when he was decent? Wazzup with that sort of thinking? And Joba is denying his problems the same way Ike did last year ... infuriating.

And Petitte? He's looking pretty bad these days also. He has not looked like his younger self since he was (ahem) younger.

We have problems with our 3 and 4 pitchers ... and need to find a 5th one soon.

- end rants.

I think the Yankees need to take a tougher line with Joba. It's fix this here or fix it in the minors. I sense this kid needs a big kick in the backside. And when you add Pettitte's struggles to all of this it infuriates me that they are fooling around with Aceves They need to get him in the rotation now and create some alternatives for down the road. If Wang comes back and Aceves is pitching decently in the rotation you can take Joba or Pettitte out of it. Right now that is going to be hard to do.

Agreed Peter. I would tweak your suggestion by putting Joba in the pen and letting him tweak his stuff in the 7th or 8th innings.

I also see Aceves having the stuff and the discipline to be a decent starter for us.

Here's a wild thought - not original to me tho - Cliff Lee. Lousy won/loss record (understandable) but very good WHIP and ERA. He just needs some run support. Your thoughts? Anybody else's thoughts?

Love him, love the idea of him in the rotation, but how would you get him?

I imagine Cleveland starts the conversation with "Phil Hughes"

I think it could be done for Joba, the checkbook and a catching prospect.

I see Joba's ceiling as lower than Hughes'. Hughes has the maturity to be a long term asset to us. I see Joba's problems being mental, not physical - and mental problems are tougher to solve. Tommy John surgery is wonderful, but they don't have surgery to fix either stupidity or bullheadedness.

I like everything I see about Lee and I think he's a very solid number 3 pitcher for us with, esp. with some run support. He also eats innings.

OK, so I'm swapping one starter for another, not solving the Wang and Petitte problems. But I think getting Joba out of the rotation relieves our relievers and opens the door a little but wider for Aceves to step up on an interim basis until Wang returns or Hughes stretches out.

For the short term, it's starting to look like Mitre is the new no. 5 guy for us.

I'll think about it some more ...

I think what Girardi likes about Tomko is that he comes in with o.k. stuff and gets the ball over the plate. He's eminently hittable, but he's not going to pussy foot around like most of the Yankee relievers seem to do. I'm sick and tired of relievers who are afraid to throw strikes, so I have some sympathy for Girardi.

But, you really have to wonder if Girardi knows what he's doing when it comes to managing pitchers. I think he sticks with his starters far too long. Also, if you are getting leads against the Angels and there is a long All Star break coming up, wouldn't it be nice to see the front end of your relief staff (Hughes in particular) come in earlier in the game? And is your guy fresh up from Triple A really the right guy to serve up to the Angels on Friday in an important game? I mean why are you letting the Angels beat up on your worst pitchers. Could you at least try to win one game?

For instance, it was very clear to me on Saturday that Pettite did not have it. The Angels had been through the order once and had figured Pettite out. Everybody is hitting the ball hard. Why not get him out of there before you give up the lead? It seems to me that Girardi is always giving his pitichers one or two more hitters than he should.

My favorite Torre moment was when he took the ball from Neagle in the 5th innning in the World Series. The look on Neagle's face was priceless -- "you mean you're going to take me out before I can get credit for a win??" But you could tell what Torre was thinking -- I've lost too many games sticking with your sorry butt. You want Joba to start throwing strikes? How about yanking him early a few times. That will give him the message.

Great points, Corey and I couldn't agree more.

Mitchell, I am not there yet and I definitely would not give up Montero if that's the catcher prospect you are thinking of. Romine and Joba I would need to think long and hard about.

Romine & Joba.

I am going to think about that one for awhile Mitchell.

I like to agree with, whats with Cashman, He just commits blunder after blunder. Tomko???? I hope is not a part of our future, If he is not release him and get the kids up..We all forget about Marte, what was in Cashmans mind resigning this bum for years, I know Cash sees all the games, what does he see that we all don't see..??/

How come my comments are never posted? a'm I posting wrong?

What is with Cashman? why doesn't he see what we all see, Tomko is not a part of our future, I hope not.. He resigns marte WHY???? the guy belongs in the NL, He adds Hinske ,, another why, Get Ajax up here and start getting ML at bats, he is our future , he is more ready than any body else that " tries" to play the outfield for us now, you see what a difference gardner makes just glove alone.. melky swisher damon , damon boy if only somebody would have taught him in LL how to go after a ball . mind boggling how he sticks his glove up and runs around till he gets dizzy ,falls down then goes on the hurt my whatever list. its painful to watch.Matsui will son digress to putting hisright foot out of the box again and have zero clue how to swing a bat. what happened to this guy the last two years..Girardi didn't know Joba was in trouble the first four inns.? jobas lease should have been like aceves was. maybe we could have pulled that game outsame as for pettite, you can set the clock for him to get lit up in the forth or fifth inn. he does not push the hitters off the plate and is afraid of contact.Posada can;t catch a ball in the dirt, or anything low.He hits 390 off of lackey buts sits him???? molina should have faced sauders and no bend the last two games. if molina catches the first game maybe it would have been closer. girardi has been such a huhg disappointment for me, i wanted him to get the job as much as he wanted it, boy was i wrong about his metal..he paniced again in april like torre did against the sox.. OK MO go get em eight inn. we had a fresh bullpen ,why burn him then. the vout come has been the same with Mo.. no ties or big leads o five or six outs . period.. numbers don't lie . people do. just ranting
