Out Of The Mouths Of Babes....
Phil Hughes said this after today's game:
"People think it’s easy. It’s not. We’re 23, we’re still learning. But I bet Joba remembers this game.”
He's dead on. For all the back and forth we have about Joba and Hughes and other young players, it's important to remember they are still just kids. Sometimes that helps them, sometimes it hurts them, but hopefully they will learn and grow. How good can Joba and Hughes be? No one knows for sure, but today was another reminder of why you keep them around.
Great weekend for the Yankees, exactly what you hoped to see coming out of the break. Now they need to keep it going against Baltimore.

Yep, kids are kids. I've got a few living with me so that expression is used frequently in my home. ;-)
I still don't know which Joba will show up for a game or even which one will show up for a particular inning !!! Speed is up - no, wait, it's down. Location is great- no wait, it's ball four. Challenging the batter! Yeah - I mean no - we're just flirting with the strike zone. Will the real Joba please stand up - please ???
At this point I don't really know what to expect from Joba.
Hughes? Yep, I think he's a heck of a lot more consistent in so many ways ...
We'll see how this all plays out. Only thing I know is that it's not going to be quite how I would have predicted it.

One thing that the Hughes/Chamberlain odyssey seems to be showing clearly is just how much easier it is to be a shutdown setup man than a consistent, above average starter.
Somewhat oddly, that thought makes me appreciate Mussinas career even more.

Ian,
I agree completely with your admiration for Moose. His career is amazing:
Over 18 years, 537 starts, 3562 innings - his ERA is 3.68, his WHIP is 1.19 and his best year was his last one at age 39 when he wins 20 for the first time in his career. At age 23? He was 18-5 with a 2.38 ERA.
Joba and Hughes would be very lucky to have a career like Mussina's.
