Have I Told You Lately...
...that I love you?
Joe Madden, you could not have been a better All-Star game manager Tuesday night. As a Red Sox fan, I cannot think of a better outcome. Let me tell you why:
- Josh Beckett and Tim Wakefield didn't pitch.
- Jonathan Papelbon threw only 10 pitches.
- Kevin Youkilis and Jason Bay combined to go 2-3 and Dustin Pedroia stayed home.
The All-Star break is always a bunch of fun and it is good for baseball, but for a fan rooting for a team in contention, there is always the worry of overuse or injury. The Red Sox leave St. Louis in good shape.
Interesting to hear the players talk about meeting the President. George Bush owned a baseball team, but Barack Obama seems to be far more the sports fan than any other President I can remember. Not a political stance by any means, just an observation. He trotted out with a White Sox jacket on, in St. Louis, and he seems to enjoy talking about sports in general.

What about Clinton and Arkansas basketball? He was a pretty big fan of that.

I feel bad for Wakefield, but once it got to the 6th inning or so you cannot argue with the strategy of Pap, Nathan and Rivera to close it out.
I was afraid Beckett was going to be used early in the game and quite relieved he didn't play.
I thought it was a shame that Hill had to play so long at 2B with Pedroia's absense. If a player is going to get 3+ at bats in an All-Star game I remember it being the Rod Carews, Dave Parkers, George Brett type of players, not Aaron Hill (disrespecting a .292 hitter with 20 HR at the break, sorry).
The game was quick, I was surprised I actually watched the entire game. Haven't done that in years.

No doubt, but I meant as an overall sports fan. One that seemed to get really into everything, not just a local sports team. He is a baseball fan, hoops fans, football fan, sort of across the board. Again, trying not to be political.

I, for one, wasn't happy to see Wake sitting through the entire game. The guy's first all-star game, and probably last. It's not like he's a second tier all star either, he's got the best record in baseball. He should have at least gotten the chance to throw one inning.
(Arkansas has a basketball team??)

I agree Evan, he should have gotten to pitch.
And I was referring to the University of Arkansas. Pig Sooie!

Yeah, Wake's first All-Star game...should pitched. And man when Jeter got plunked in the 1st inning, I lost the ability to breathe for a minute.

I think the networks mandated that Wake not pitch. They wanted to keep the game under 3 hours and having Wake's pitches take 2+ minutes to flutter across the plate ... it just wouldn't have worked.
