Back To Even

And so once again the Yankees and Red Sox are all tied up for the AL East lead.  For the Yankees, 55-37 marks the high point of the season so far and their best record in relation to games over .500 since the end of the 2007 season.

So, with 70 games to go it is a dead heat.  Based on the news tonight, I still think the Yankees need to trade for a starter for the back of the rotation.  If they do that, I like their chances to pull this out.

Do you guys want Brad Penny or John Smoltz? They both qualify for "back of the rotation."

I don't know if the Yanks NEED to go get a 5th starter. I know Pettite is a bit of a question mark but is having a 5th starter THAT vital?

don't lose faith Andy, Tito left Smoltz in 2 HR too long. After the first one he should have taken him out and preserved the outing (maybe the game too). I have no idea what the pitch count was but it had to be up there.

Andy- I think both would be better than Mitre and thanks for giving me an idea for "Tuesday Trivia"

Tim- I think so and I count Pettitte as the 4th starter right now. I just want someone who won't burn the bullpen out each turn.

if they plan to replace a starter they should get a guy who is a three or better guy, wang was our three, he will never be able to pitch a half year again ,they must come to reality. pettite has been done, now he is over done. lets not go blind from last night. hey even a broken clock is right twice a day.. we need two pitchers but not a rethread..joba also is a question mark.. hughes will be our closer if he keeps his metal up..2011..melancon could also be that guy.but don't count on hughes to start next year. so we may need three starters if joba is going to throw 100 plus pitches by the fifth / he will need a bullpen just for himself..

I guess that it'd be great to get an innings eater for the bottom of the rotation but I'm not convinced it'll make that much of an impact [a quality 5th starter].

Obviously, the playoffs is a 4 man rotation and does it really matter if the Yanks win the division or not? They are ~5 games up on a wild card. I don't see us not making the cut.

You can make the case that it "saves" the bullpen for the post season but really you probably shrink that bullpen down to 3 maybe 4 arms for the playoffs so really its a matter of identifying those arms and limiting their use. Are we really in danger of overusing Hughes/Rivera?

I see how it would be "nice" I'm just not sure its that necessary. I guess it comes down to what it costs to get a guy, usually its pretty pricey.
