Weak Start
Let's not overanalyze this one, the Yankees never had a chance thanks to their starting pitcher. The one thing to spend a little time on is the pitcher was AJ Burnett, mythical slayer of the AL East. Well since he dominated Tampa back in April, where has that guy been?
All the cream pies in the universe don't mean a thing unless you get some wins and right now Burnett is 4-3 with a 4.89 ERA. This is the guy I was worried about getting. The guy with the great stuff, but inability to apply it. I could still be woefully wrong on this, and I certainly hope I am. But right now, AJ isn't worth much.
Tomorrow night we get Chien-Ming Wang thrown into Fenway. Does anyone else feel bad about our chances? I guess the one good thing in all of this is that if CC does his job on Thursday the Yankees leave Boston tied for first. That's really all that matters right now.
Comments
So I'm sitting on the couch with my wife and we're watching AJ spray pitches all over the place and she says, "This guy has no idea where his pitch is going to wind up, does he?" Uh, yup, honey - you're right. Then we move on to watching Veras come in and flop around the mound while he pitches and then she comments, "Wouldn't it be easier to throw it into the catcher's glove if he would stop falling around like that while he's throwing?". Yes. honey, it probably would be. Her last question of the night was, "Doesn't the coach know these things? Can't he get these guys to settle down and control their pitches better?"
What a brutal game to watch, especially if you're a fan of good pitching ...

Mitchell - I think your wife would make a good pitching coach, she picked up on flaws very quickly and all you need to do is get her an interview with Cash...
Seriously, on the Sox NESN broadcast they commented for a few minutes on Veras' motion and how violent his head moves during the pitch. He looks like you or I would at a state fair trying to get fastest pitch with the radar gun tracking it...body parts flying all over the place.
One game, had our ace going, tonight should be interesting

Hi BL,
The game was s study in contrasts. Josh was rigidly consistent in his pitching motion and locating the ball where he wants, breaking it how he wants. He was GOOD !!!
This may sound odd, but Phil Hughes had the same sort of rock-steady consistency in his motion, delivery and location the other night when he pitched the 7th against the Rays (which game you may not have caught). If he keeps that up and stays confident enuf to throw strikes and not nibble on corners, he'll be an ace.
Listening to AJ after the game? He sounds like he's in denial about some of his issues - dumb and in denial.
Yep, still looking for my arm after my last display in front of the radar gun at the local minor league stadium. Lemme know if you find it please ...

Peter, Wang has struggled this year, but Wakefield has never done well against the Yankees. Should be an interesting (as in I cannot believe how many hits the 2 teams have tonight) game.

You guys are missing the point. Yes, A.J.'s outing was frustrating, but there is no excuse for being shut out at Fenway. Championship teams sometimes have the win by slugging it out, and the Yanks are going to have to show a more consistent offense.
As for tonight's game, I like our chances as much as Boston's. This is Fenway. Whoever scores the most runs wins. Go with Wang-Hughes-Coke-Rivera, score 6 runs, and we win.

I officially set the over/under for total hits+walks (combined both teams) tonight at:
25
who wants over, who wants under

ok, my previous post sent in now seems low, last night the teams combined for 22 hits+walks
over/under for tonight with Wake/Wang pitching matchup has to be set higher
how about 30 ?

Andy- Your comment compelled me to do some research because I always think of Wakefield doing well against the Yankees. He has a 5.03 career ERA against them, but a 3.77ERA at Yankee Stadium. So, you are right and I must be thinking of those games at the Stadium.
Corey- You are right, the offense needs to do better. I wish I shared your optimism that six runs will do it tonight. I think BL is on the right track with his 30 over/under on hits and walks.
