Eric Hinske?
Wasn't it just the other day that Brian Cashman said the team didn't need to trade for a bat? Well he lied, because the Yankees have apparently traded for Eric Hinske.
Hinske doesn't hit for much power these days, but he can play the corners in the infield and outfield. He is also a lefty bat. I suspect this means the Yankees will send Ramiro Pena back to the minors and let him play everyday. That would leave a bench of Cabrera, Hinske, Ransom and Cervelli on most days.
The Yankees didn't give up much in the way of prospects. Erickson is in A ball and I believe would need to be added to the 40-man at the end of this year or be subject to the Rule 5. (Very, very doubtful they would have protcted him) Fryer was acquired from the Brewers for Chase Wright and hasn't done much in Tampa.
UPDATE: Joel Sherman has a blog post up with some reasons for the deal and it sounds like Pena is going to the minors.

Were I Shelley Duncan, I would probably start think about getting into another line of work.
But, Hinske seems to offer an awful lot of versatility in the positions he can play - for very short dollars. Also it's great that they're going to get Pena playing every day (and trying him out in the OF).
Seems like the Pirates are a feeder ball club for us lately, no?

and yep, Cashmoney did say that - probably like he told Torre that he supported his return a few years ago. ;-)

Good points on both. Shelley needs a new team and the Pittsburgh-New York relationship is a lot like the old KC-New York relationship in the 50's.

Thoughts on tonight's game:
Joba flirts with disaster in games like tonight's: a WHIP north of 2.3 is going to get him creamed one day soon. Yep, his ERA is under 4.0 but with a WHIP over two, eventually his ERA will rise.
Also, if I could text Girardi a message it would be: Hughes throws 9 pitches in a beautiful inning - you couldn't let him throw in the 8th inning as well? Wazzup with that???
