It's The DL

Molina is headed to the DL and Kevin Cash is coming up to the bigs.  Cash played for Boston last year and hit .225.  I can't say this enough, but Brian Cashman YOU HAVE TO TRADE FOR A CATCHER WHO CAN ACTUALLY HIT.  Sorry to freak out there.  The Yankees haven't announced a 40-man move yet to get Cash on the roster.

In other news, Mark Melancon has been sent to the minors to make room for A-Rod.  This means we only have 12 pitchers active which is progress.

Yep, that would be a great thing to do Peter.

Were Cash calling me for advice, I'd ask him to also see if he can get a 1 year rental catcher if he sees someone superb whose contract expires at the end of this season. We have Damon, Matsui, Nady and Molina in their walk years. We'll have some room to maneuver in November.

PS - Welcome back Alex. You certainly have a dramatic flair launching the first pitch you see into the stands. LOL.

Peter, Molina's injury isn't huge, do you empty the farm to trade for a catcher who can hit?

Do you care if this "hitting catcher" you are seeking can, you know, catch?

I think you are overreacting and you guys have quite a bit tied up in salary already. If you were GM, just which catcher would you be targeting?

This is a continuation of a post from the other day (http://yankeesredsox.com/blog/2009/05/posada_to_the_dl.html#comments)

I am not suggesting that the Yankees "empty the farm" but I think they need to address the catching situation. Molina is a great defensive catcher with no bat. He also can't stay healthy when he has to catch full time.

The Yankees have future catchers in A ball, but nobody on the immediate horizon who can step in for Posada. Someone needs to be able to step in and catch 50 games or so a year for the next few years. That's worth a trade.

I understand the lack of immediate help, but I think a Molina is far more important for his catching than his offense.

I think LoDuca is available, as are a few other catchers, but not good one that can catch and hit.

True, but 50 games of Molina catching is going to really kill your offense.

A catcher that can hit decently is quite the commodity...where is this mystery catcher going to come from? Cervelli doesn't look bad and since there's not likely to be any better options for at least 2 months let see what we've got here. Hes got some flair behind the plate, thats for sure.

Well, based on last year Molina put up a .216/.263/.313 line, so the bar isn't set very high. I like Cervelli, I just have a hard time believing a guy who was hitting .190 in AA ball can do much in the majors, but I would love to be wrong.
