Is This A Shock To Anyone?
Well, looks like we have another big star who tested positive for steroids a banned substance. Only this time, he will be suspended 50 games.
UPDATE: Ok weird addition to the story here. Peter Gammons is reporting that Manny has been suspended for using a drug other than steroids that he had a prescription for. If it was legally prescribed, why the suspension?
UPDATE 2: Manny has issued a statement where he says he took a prescription drug that was not a steroid but was on the banned list. He points out that he has passed 15 drug tests in the past 5 years and apologizes to the Dodgers, fans, etc.. Now, will Manny take questions on this and if so, you have to assume that question #1 is going to be about whether or not he has ever taken a banned substance. Also, I would assume he is going to produce the Dr. involved in this mess if he really wants to clear his name.
Comments
This is huge, because he was actually caught in the act on a real time basis.
Not "reported positive test" from 5 years. This is biggest name caught in the act since Palmeiro.

If it was prescribed, that doesn't matter unless the commissioners office gives it the ok ahead of time. If all that was needed was a prescription, you'd have doctors prescribing steroids and HGH all day long to MLBers.

dumbass should have cleared it with mlb if it was truly "ok"
I have believed he was not ever a steroid user, beginning to wonder now

OK, I'm not a Sox fan (obviously) and I'm not a fan of Manny due to his behaviors but I HAVE to suspend all judgment about this until ALL the details come out. Here's why:
Some scripted meds have chemicals which morph into other substances either when taken in combination with other drugs or when simply ingested and processed. Right now we're on a "high alert" about "steroids". Real life example: I take steroids infrequently with two different scrips - both for allergies - and my steroids dont do a thing for my atheltic perfomance, but they do help shrink nasal passages and lung lining. When I ask my MD if I would be banned from baseball for taking these, he gets a really faraway "I'm thinking" look then tells me - "possibly" !
In other words, this may not be a simple as it appears on the surface. Was he a putz for not clearing this with MLB? Yep !!! Might he be a foolish "innocent" - however that word can be used - YEP!
I truly believe that this event is NOT a smoking gun for Manny ingesting PEDs.

By the way, can you imagine the lawsuit that Manny can bring against his MD's insurance company for this mess? I imagine that Boras' phones are rigning off the hook with offers from malpractice lawyers. WOW!

Normally, I would totally agree Mitchell, but if this report is true http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4148907
I don't think they have much of a case.

Peter - He was reportedly taking it to stimulate testoterone production as a sexual enhancer. If he was taking it as partof a recovery from anabolics, those anabolics would have shown up in his tests very easily.
This is a case of drugs being taken for different reasons, one nefarious - one hilarious.
I would bring the suit and settle for $100 MM, take my 33% cut and retire to Scottsdale.

I thought he had artificial testosterone and HCG in his system?
Either way, I guess we know who can take Rafael Palmeiro's place in those Viagra adds.
