Cervelli To The Rescue?

Despite hitting .190 in Trenton (AA) Cervelli has been called up to the Yankees.  Why did they do this?  I can think of two reasons.

1- Cervelli is the only other catcher on the 40-man roster

2- Kevin Cash is on the DL in the minors.  Chris Stewart is hitting .175 in AAA and PJ Pilittere has a noodle for an arm.

This leads me to believe that the Yankees will try and swing a deal because they don't like their AAA options (obviously) and Cervelli seems like a move they made because it was the easiest one to make (no 40-man move) and not because they believe in him.  We shall see.

BTW- Posada was diagnosed with a Grade 2 hamstring tear.  Not that it's the same body part, but A-Rod was diagnosed with a Grade 2 quad tear last year when he went on the DL in April and he missed about 3 weeks.

Peter - who do you see as being available as catcher and what/who do you think it would take to bring him in?

Mitchell- I don't think it will happen, but the papers in New York have been full of stories about how Jerry Manuel doesn't like Ramon Castro. Now, when Brian Schneider comes back the Mets have three catchers. They also could use an outfielder who can play defense. A Melky for Castro trade could make sense for both clubs, but I don't think the two GM's want to trade with each other.

Beyond that the two targets would be Texas and Arizona. Texas has a lot of young catchers, perhaps a package headlined by Ian Kennedy get one of them back?

Arizona has Montero who is their backup and has hit solidly in the majors. I bet Kennedy could draw some interest there as well.

Looks like Castro won't be coming....

A Yankees source said the team is not currently interested in Mets catcher Ramon Castro because they expect to get Posada and Molina back. Castro has fallen out of favor with Mets management.
