What Now?

It's 13-2, Chien-Ming Wang was rocked again and the new stadium looks like Coors Field.  At this rate this game might end 30-2.

I have no idea what the Yankees can do about it, but the ball really carries at the new place.  Today is pretty warm, but can you imagine what the scores are going to be in July if the ball carries like this in April?

As for Wang, I think the Yankees need to find an "injury" that will allow them to DL him and get him some minor league rehab starts.  At the very least, they need to use the offday on Thursday to reorder their rotation and keep Wang from making his next start Friday night at Fenway.  They can easily do it, just pitch Burnett, Pettitte and Sabathia on their regular rest and save Wang for the Detroit series.

What the Yankees really have to do is rethink their position on a long reliever.  The bullpen is going to be fried by the end of the month at this rate.  Claggett has already thrown 33 pitches and we haven't reached the 3rd inning.  So, you probably have the other bullpen guys pitching six innings today, not good at all.  What will probably happen now is the Yankees will use Nady's injury to add a pitcher to the 40-man, perhaps Brett Tomko since he is pitching well at Scranton.  Aceves has gotten shelled in Scranton so far, so I don't think it will be him.

THIS is ridiculous. How a guy can go from being a 19 game winner to this state of affairs is truly amazing. Maybe marriage disagrees with CMW - whatever it is ... ugh.

Peter,

So how long do you think the Yankees keep running Wang out there before going to Plan B (which I assume entails bringing Hughes up)? Today's game was unbearably brutal. After the first inning I was cautiously optimistic that he was finally back on track. I agree with Mitchell -- this is bizarre. Not sure at this point how much is mental and how much is physical (maybe he is subconsciously favoring the foot, thereby altering his mechanics?), but it feels like Wang's season is spinning irretrievably out of control. His confidence must be completely shot. Obviously, a pitcher of his proven talents must be given a chance to straighten himself out. On the other hand, this cannot go on indefinitely. It sucks the life out of the bullpen, not to mention the rest of the team.

My gosh -- this isn't the Curse of the Pavano, is it?!?

best advice : flush it out of memory, giving up 3 touchdowns is an aberration, let it go. Go back to discussing the slumping hitters, the injuries and the bullpen. Still only counts as one loss, right?

Greg

I think you give him one more shot to fix this at the big league level, but that's it. (And I would definitely not make that chance next Friday at Fenway, that's a suicide mission)

And so of course Pavano comes in with a 16-something ERA, not having done a damn thing since October of 2003, and the SOB is holding us to a run. This is too damn much salt rubbed in to yesterday's still gaping wound. Grrrr.
