John Henry: "O Captain My Captain"
The Boston Globe is reporting that Red Sox Principal Owner John Henry is schedule to meet with Jason Varitek tonight in the Atlanta area. Varitek apparently requested the meeting and Scott Boras will not be there.
My guess is that this is an attempt for both sides to get a read on things. Because of what Varitek has meant to the Red Sox, I wouldn't be surprised that if they do have enough common ground, this will lead to a deal, a deal that will not make look Varitek look foolish while at the same time giving the Red Sox some value.
I don't think the Red Sox are an overly sympathetic group, but in this case I think they are willing to help Varitek save face. Perhaps a 2-year deal at $7.5mm per year. Just my opinion.
Let's just hope the Red Sox captain hasn't met the same fate as Whitman's captain.

That's what I came up with.
I tried driving around looking for the two of them yesterday, hoping I could add some wisdom to the conversation.
Tried establishments like The Buckhead Diner, Chops, and The Atlanta Fish Market. None of those top restaurants had any sign of a secret meeting between the two. I did however get to try some of the chowder at the Fish Market. Ok for Atlanta I guess, but not great.
Next I went to ESPNzone, perhaps Henry would slum down and maybe challenge Tek to one of the arcade games to settle the gap in contract value. Didn't see them but tried some mediocre wings.
ok, maybe they didn't talk over food...so off I went to the Georgia Aquarium. At one point I saw two men talking quietly in a corner, unfortunately you see a lot of that in Atlanta, it wasn't Henry and Tek.
While near the Aquarium, I decided to get a quick lobster roll at Legal Seafoods (yeah, Legal opened up next to the aquarium, kind of odd to me).
While downtown, I figured maybe they were down at Turner Field, maybe Tek had worked out a deal with the Braves to use the cages or something. Nope, the security guard hadn't seen them at all.
I'm starting to believe they never met at all...too bad because I hadn't had desert yet.

Poetry? My friend Hank Whitman has fantasy baseball team and Varitek is his team captain.
When Varitek was doing poorly last year, he'd yell out "O Captain My Captain...you jerk."
That's was I was referencing.
