Burnett Is Next

It's all over the internet that the Yankees have signed Burnett to a five-year/$82.5 million deal.  Obivously, this deal boils down to Burnett's health.  If he is healthy, the Yankees have made a pretty good deal, if he isn't, well let's just say we just lived through four years of Pavano.  One thing is for sure.  If they are healthy and the Yankees make the playoffs, they have a great rotation.

The real question is where do the Yankees go next?  Personally, I would be happy to go into 2009 with a rotation of Sabathia, Wang, Burnett, Joba and Hughes, but I don't think the Yankees are of that mindset.  I imagine it will be Pettitte or Sheets for the last spot with Hughes sitting in the minors for when injuries occur.  What you have to hope is that Brian Cashman isn't done addressing the offense.  Cabrera for Cameron isn't a terrible idea, but it also isn't that much of an improvement.  Teixeira would go a long way to fixing some offensive problems and the Yankees would be wise to think about him again.

Cameron had a .808 OPS last year, Melky a .642. I'd say that's an offensive upgrade. Perhaps it is only awful to ok, but it is still a significant upgrade.

Very true, but Cameron is also going to be 36 and things can go downhill quickly at that age. (As you should know)

I agree Tex would be great but hes going to cost scary money (not that he isnt worth it).

What about Dunn? As a DH/part time outfielder he makes a lot of sense. His game would fit the Yanks style well, and hes pretty young too. I think he would be a good fit for the right amount.

Damon
Jeter
Matsui
A-Rod
Posada
Nady
Cano
Cameron
Swisher.

No holes in that lineup. Believe it or not, Swisher completely makes up for Giambi. Before his terrible 2008, Swisher put together a 125 OPS+ season and a 127 OPS+ season. Last year Giambi had a 128 OPS+ with terrible defense. Our offense will be fine if it is not upgraded (besides Cameron). The Yanks went to 3 straight WS from 99-01 and won two w/o being top 5 in RS in MLB. Pitching wins.

Burnett
Wang
Pettitte
Chamberlain/Hughes.

That is a top 5 rotation.

I guess that Yankees haven't learned. I'm glad my Sox have. You can't buy a dynasty, you build it from the minors and then complement it with the free agent signings. I'm jealous that the Sox don't spend the same way, but I like that we don't have to to win championships.
