Say Goodbye to Boston?

Manny Ramirez did last night what he has done so many times before.  He sat while his team needed him.  Knee injury or not, the race for a playoff spot is tight and the Red Sox are obviously a better squad with Manny than without.

By declaring himself unable to play (despite two clean MRIs after the game), Manny forever likened himself to Nomar Garciaparra.  I'll confess, while watching the game last night, I didn't put this comparison together, rather it happened Saturday morning.

Remember the 2004 game in the Bronx where Derek Jeter made one of the greatest catches ever?  He was in a full sprint to snare a pop-up and his momentum carried him into the stands only to emerge bruised and bloodied?  I know you know the game.  It was also the same game where Nomar Garciaparra sat on the bench while the rest of his teammates were leaning against the dugout netting.  Garciaparra's brooding and unwillingness to be part of the team ultimately led to his being traded and perhaps changed the direction of the Red Sox franchise.

Well Friday night was Nomar all over again, except this time it was Manny.  Enough is enough.  The trade deadline is 5 days away and the Red Sox need help.  David Ortiz is back, but if Manny decides to play the role of a 3 year old, again, there is no time to wait him out.  Send him packing and try to acquire help.  The Yankees just made a good move in getting OF help and a situational lefty.  A nice pick-up for a team just 2 games back from Boston.

I am not about to propose trade ideas or what I think the Red Sox could get in return for Manny, but anything is better than a $20mm player not willing to play.

The Boston Globe's Gordon Edes said "one player (teammate) called it a disgrace and would not be surprised if the team tried to trade Ramirez."

Ramirez is probably acting like this because he wants to know if his team option will be picked up for next year.  Well, this is proof again that Ramirez is less mature than most toddlers.  He fails to realize the significance of a "team first" attitude.  What makes it all the more shameful is that Manny has already earned over $160,000,000 playing baseball and despite that, he is more concerned about his next paycheck than his next World Series opportunity.

Manny, you are a bore.  Take your act somewhere else.

Red Sox notes: As for the game itself, Friday was a frustrating night for Red Sox fans.  Too few hits (who could have helped there I wonder), a bad called third strike (part of the game) and yet another bean-ball by Joba Chamberlain aimed at Kevin Youkilis's head.  That last part is very distressing.  Per Baseball Tonight, Jason Varitek was heard wondering aloud how to deal with Chamberlain.  The conclusion was to ultimately take matters in the players hands.  In other words, I guess we can expect a plunk fest today or tomorrow.  Most likely tomorrow because Tim Wakefield just doesn't have the capacity to, well, hurt or intimidate an opposing batter.  He can humiliate them sure, but that's really all.

Get ready for some Tim McCarver today!!!

Andy,

Does Manny have full/partial no-trade protection?

It's kind of late to all of a sudden decide to trade a player of Manny's talent, no? I would think that deals involving players of his magnitude take some time to develop. How do you possibly get fair talent in return for him?

The Angels could use a hitter like him. They're desperate for offense. He would pair quite nicely with Guerrero. If they add him to their lineup, I would think they instantly become the clear-cut World Series favorite. They can afford him, as they're a big bucks ballclub. I don't know what they would be willing to offer. They're difficult to trade with.

Thah having been said, Manny is in many ways a selfish, spoiled child. An all-time great, first-ballot Hall of Fame caliber hitter, to be sure, but a royal pain in the you-know-what.

I would go so far to say that the Garciaparra trade was, along with the previous Schilling trade, a critical step in the transformation of the Red Sox. Without both those trades, I don't believe they win the pennant.

Greg,

Manny gets a $1mm bonus if traded (like he needs it) and if another Red Sox player is granted a no-trade clause, he get's one too. No other Red Sox player has a no-trade clause.

I agree, trading a player like Manny in such short notice will probably result in an 80 cents on the dollar deal. But, my contention is that if he doesn't want to play for Boston and will claim injury in order to not play, why not trade him.

At current, he is useless to the Red Sox. He only helps them if he plays, which he is unwilling to do.

The Angels could use him. The other major problem dealing Manny is that only a few teams can afford his salary and all are likely in the hunt. Boston would not want to move him to a contender only to have Manny decide he is healthy again and beat the Red Sox up.

Andy, I have to say, I agree with the moving Manny thing. Whether this year (possibly best) or b/f next season, it needs to be looked at. He is a wonderful hitter and a first ballot HoF'er but a royal pain in the a#@. I loved the idea floating around the web about Manny, Hansen, and another prospect for Matt Holliday and Brian Fuentes but I have to believe the Rox will want more. I also don't understand why this team (Theo et al) lost out on Rauch (I read the Nats wanted Lowrie and Bard - but that has to be BS b/c they traded Rauch for Emilio Bonifacio for God's sake...) and Marte. The updated Yanks return package of Tabata, Ohlendorf, Karstens and one other is better than what I first read but still... Come on Theo, if you are going to trade for any relief help, then bring up Bard along with Masterson and let's try to get it done that way. Masterson was great the other night in Seattle by the way. But, back to Manny, if you can move him for real help, I say do it now, even if we have to eat major cash. If not, I think you have to ride it out this season and then pick up the option and move him during the next hot stove/winter meetings timeframe. Great analogy to Nomar btw, hadn't thought of that but it is appropriate.

Let's go Theo, move Manny etc for Holliday and Fuentes. If it can be done, let's do it!

If anyone thinks Joba threw at Youk you have no concept of the game. I love Sox fans love hate about Manny. Manny has been nicked all year. Has hung in there with Papi gone. Did they lose because Manny was out or is it because they got shutout by a very good young pitcher. Not the first time this year they have been shutout. Bad called strike....Palllleesse. Play the game, shut up! You are in 2nd place. Got a great staff and great hitters...why panic. This sounds like the old soxs not the team of the last few years. I admire your coach and several players and I am a Yankee FAN...Geez

Absolute hog wash, trading Manny, and trading him now 5 days before the deadline,

Above, 80 cents on the dollar, c'mon perhaps less than 50 or 40 cents on the dollar. If teams think the Sox "need" to dump him, why trade anybody, just wait until he is released. Teams are not stupid.

Kind of like Favre situation, Favre will be traded because Pack does not want the Vikes to pick him up.

So let's pay Ramirez salary so the Yankees can pick him up and he can play the for the Yankees and kick the Sox asses down the stretch.

He will NOT be released, maybe traded (also unlikely), but to NL, why would anyone want to give anything up for Manny (Holliday, Teixeira, thee guys are as good as Manny (and model citizens), why would Manny all of the sudden Start Playing for another team, it's a big risk for that team. Manny;s best best is to show up, play, kick ass and Win another WS for the RS, and option will be picked up by Sox again.

Perhaps Theo can trade pitching for Holliday, or Teix, but Teix is not going to be a rental, need to have long term. But then you habe to move Youks to OF, c'mon, Youks is a GG 1B/3B.

He will walk at end of year, if Sox do not pick up option, and hold out for most money, Yankees probably, (sorry Damon, you are washed up).

When has a mid season trade impacted the Sox, ok, 04, Nomar for Cabrera, but we could write a book, Everet (a***ole), Bichet, Lee Smith, I am sure I am missing some.

The trades you don't make, i like, a few days to a week, MAnny and Papi ripping once again, and all other stepping up.

No way the Sox can trade Manny within the AL. He's still enough of a difference-maker that adding him to an AL competitor such as the Angels would significantly reduce the Sox's chance of making it to the World Series. And obviously, a bottom-feeder doesn't have the need or wherewithal to trade for the guy.

The only way the Sox could make this work would be to trade Manny to a National League contender. If I'm Theo Epstein, I'm looking at West Coast teams because A) they're hungry for offense, B) several of them have good farm systems, and C) none of them are competing at a high level this season. The way things are going, I could totally see Manny in a Dodgers uniform.

As a 10/5 player, Ramirez does indeed have the right to veto any potential deal.

For what it is worth, I never suggested releasing Manny. That would be dumb. My suggest, although now that I read the post again, I didn't make it clear, was to trade him. A tall order? Yes and not full value in return.

Trading him to the AL East is crazy and would never happen. Ideall, as Chris H. said, to the NL.

PJP also correctly pointed out Manny is a 10/5 guy (10 years in the bigs and 5 consecutive on his current team) and has the right to veto any deal. So now you are looking at getting assistance from Manny himself in getting a deal done.

Tony, thanks for telling me I don't know baseball.

Lastly, Manny is in the line-up, so all of this is moot...for the time being. Let's hope someone got through to him that he needs to change his focus away from money and instead on playoffs.

No matter what the Red Sox do with the Manny situation, it is just getting so old, his act.

I think the problem the Red Sox would run into if they tried to trade him is that Manny would simply say "I won't approve the trade unless the acquiring team picks up my 2009 and 2010 options." He really has no motivation to do otherwise and since the Red Sox will never get equal value for him I think you are stuck with him until the end of the year. It is really a shame that a clear Hall of Famer has such little respect for the game.

Off topic, but

Love Craig Hansen hitting Arod just now, but thats just because he is incapable of throwing strikes.

But, for God Sakes Tito and Theo, Hansen is not a Major League pitcher

A typical Hansen inning, goes something like this,

pop out, walk, single, pop out, double, walk, single, walk,

feel free to improvise the disaster as you wish

Hansen is absolutely a disaster, make him part of some trade package or send him down, either way, I do not want to see this guy in Boston RS uniform any longer, he is done.

Oh by the way, add another double, 2 more runs, putting this one out of reach,10-3, thanks Hansen, thanks Tito,

Theo, you better get some goddamned Bull Pen help

John,

I think you are right, the $4mm the Red Sox paid him is looking like a bad investment now. I think he's had enough chances at this point to consider him at best an iffy proposition to make in with the Red Sox. He dominates in the minors, but not in the majors.

With the lifelessness we've seen the past 2 nights, I do hope Theo pulls some deal. I don't think any major is needed (unless Manny goes AWOL), but something would be nice...like some bullpen help. And quick.

I think Manny is on LSD. He is currently seeing himself as a pro NFL player who is holding out for training camp because of a contract dispute. He is an immature and a selfish player. BUT BUT BUT he is one heck of a good player. The SOX WILL NOT TRADE HIM. NO WAY. Not this late and no one would be interested. Oops. Maybe there would be teams that would be interested BUT he is just like Bonds. He attracts the whole media because of his antics but he earns his paycheck(like Bonds). But no way would the Sox trade him. They would go from a World Series Favorite to a world series spectator. Several teams would be interested.

1.) Angels- They could use him as a DH. I do not see them trading for him though.

2.) Yankees- or maybe not.

3.) Tampa Bay- Veteran Presence and World Series Experience.

4.) Every other contender out there

BUT no one would bite and his no-trade clause just makes it harder. The Red Sox would probably ask for someone that can provide right now and fill the Gap that he would be living (and it sure is a big one) and I just do not see anyone biting on that. Except for maybe Milwaukee who is really desperate to win right now(Sabathia and Sheet are most likely to walk away) But I think they are pretty descent in left field with Ryan Braun so they won't have any use for Manny. So it all leads to Manny being released after this season. If the Sox win it all again I can see him walking away and making big money somewhere else. They would not pick him up. They are better off spending there 20million somewhere else rather to a player who makes a circus every spring training and sits out for no reason when you need him the most. Case closed.

One more thing. Why not offer him for Matt Holliday? Hmmmm, makes perfect sense right? The Rockies who are still in it or at least that's what they think would get world series experience which they really lacked last year and the Sox would get almost the same production(Chill people I said almost) The Sox would be the obvious winner from the trade(younger, less media, more dedicated to winning) but the Rockies won't be losers. They get a Very good player in Ramirez. BUT BUT BUT He should be willing to waive his no-trade clause first in order for this to happen and that obviously is almost impossible. Beantown to Colorado is like Los Angeles to uhmm Colorado. haha. You get my point.
