Why?
Caught part of the pregame tonight and heard that Joe Girardi wants to keep all three catchers on the active roster through the weekend. Chad Moeller has been great filling in, but considering that he is 33, do you believe his 20 AB's this year represent his ability or the 1198 that came before this year? Moeller has produced career #'s of .226/.287/.351 and that means he has no value with his bat.
Keeping him around while Shelley Duncan languishes in AAA is just stupid. Jason Giambi may have hit a home run last night, but he is hitting .120 this season and some smart writers have suggested it may by time to say goodbye to him. I am not ready to go there yet, but sitting him down isn't a bad idea. Plus, the Yankees are scheduled to face Sabathia this weekend in Cleveland, so having a power-righty bat for the lineup would be a plus.
But, the Yankees will keep Duncan in the minors and Moeller in the majors. It's only five games, but the Yankees need every advantage they can get in 2008 and this one seems to be a no-brainer.
Comments
Peter, based on your early season posts, I am getting the impression you are not happy with Joe Girardi as manager.
Scale of 1-10, rate him thus far (10 being the good side). Obviously this would be an overall rating, not itemized by catagory or anything.
Thanks.

It's a fun game to play, but I won't "pull a Hank" and do it. Girardi deserves a lot more time before he gets a grade, especially from me.

Why Giambi? I really don't know but pitchers still seem to fear him. Two IBBs tonight.
Why is Moose able to throw a two hitter - yep, with two solo dingers - with some pitches in the low 60s? Probably had some nasty late breaks on his stuff tonight.
For that matter? Why was Traber allowed to pitch to Thome?
Why Hawkins (ERA > 11) instead of Patterson (he looked good in ST) or Rasner (who's been hot lately).
How is Mo still able to strike em out, ground em out, foul em out with two pitches in his arsenal - amazing.
I too am scratching my head a bit with some of Girardi's and Cash's decisions right now.

Mitchell- I am not ready to junk Giambi yet, but I still think Duncan should be in the bigs.
As for Traber, I am not sure what the point of having him on the team is unless you let him pitch to Thome. As we have both said before, I am happy to get rid of the "loogy" at anytime.
And my best guess on Moose is that the ability is still there, but the margin for error is tiny. When he executes flawlessly, we will get nights like tonight. When he doesn't, well we have already seen that.

Giambi really doesn't look bad at the plate. I think his numbers will come around. Cano, on the other hand, looks absolutely awful. Obviously, he's far from washed up, but maybe he's the type who would respond to a good benching.
Posada's arm must not be healed. That's the only explanation for keeping Moeller, who is out of minor league options. It may be ugly when they get to Cleveland. They'll run all over Posada if he's not 100% by then.

Peter,
Ok, are you happy with him so far?

Giambi actually looks pretty healthy on the base path and at the plate. He's taking good looking cuts and - ugh- hitting the ball right into the Giambi shift more often than not. He needs to adjust his swing to be more of a sprayer than a pulling slugger - because while he's still pulling, he's no longer slugging. Probably needs s few more tats to remind him that there's more to a baseball park than right field.
And Cano isn't swinging so much as swatting at the ball. He has zero patience at the plate. Probably trying much too hard to live up to his new salary. Wonder what size garters he takes.
