Huh?
Did Girardi just pull his only healthy catcher for a pinch-runner in a 7-5 game and no outs in the 8th inning?
Ok, Molina can't run that's for sure, but Betemit isn't exactly a track star. Plus, I assume this means Posada is going to catch the bottom of the 8th and therefore the Yankees will give up the DH. All this for a run that doesn't even tie the game?
Unless I am missing something this is an odd decision to say the least.
UPDATE (11:43)- Unfortunately, i was right and the thing that makes this move even worse is Farnsworth is now pitching. If you were going to go for it, then why isn't Joba in there right now?
And Crisp just stole second without a throw.
UPDATE (11:49) Crisp scored thanks to two flyball outs because he stole second. This has not been a good weekend for Girardi and as much as I hated yesterday's decision, this one just mystifies me. Molina wasn't even the tying run, why would you lift him for a pinch runner in the first place, but especially when YOUR OTHER CATCHER CAN'T THROW??
And, you now have an interesting possibility if the Yankees score two runs in the ninth and load the bases and make two outs, guess who is up? Yup, Farnsworth and while the Yankees would obviously use Ensberg, you then have only Jeter remaining on the bench if the game keeps going from there.
UPDATE: (12:07) Bedtime for me, but I hope someone asks Girardi about this.
Comments
OK. I'll repeat what the rest of the early risers already know. Molina was pulled due to an injury sustained in the 4th inning. Jorge was under orders to not throw under any circumstances. Going to be some folks coming out from Scranton.
Next few games are in Tampa where it should be warmer.
Our young pitching studs aren't being so "studly". And the well paid bats are choking with RISP, that is, when they're even in the game.
It's still very early in the season but this is looking pretty ugly right now on many fronts.

ugly but no repercussions, division is all within a couple games of each other, nobody is running out in front, growing pains for your young pitchers
I hate Joe Morgan but will give him credit for saying the young Yankee pitchers will likely be better in the 2nd half after gaining more experience. This made sense to me.

BLMeanie? I think the repercussions are to the confidence levels of Hughes and IPK - a little run support always lets a pitcher relax somewhat.
Also ... A-Rod is playing superhero in his head again, trying to carry the team with every at bat - to the point where he's swinging for the stands every time he's up. Hey Alex? Sometimes swinging at 80%, just to drive in a run or keep a rally going, is perfectly fine. Cano looks like he's trying to justify his new contract - guy is suffering at the plate.
Morgan is right, the younger pitchers WILL get better - unless they lose their nerve - and the older pitchers may get worse as the season wears them down. I wonder if CMW will hold up any better this year at the tail end of the season?
The bullpen may wind up being "toast" if their starters continue to exit early and often. Yep. Need a long reliever - or two?
This is a dinged up team playing well below their respective batting averages. There are a few bright spots on this Yellow Submarine but, in sum, this team seems to be sputtering pretty badly.
