Could Igawa Make This Team?

Sorry for making you throw up a bit there, but after today I think we have to seriously consider the thought of Kei Igawa as the long man in the pen.  Start with this confirmation from Peter Abraham about the candidates for the long guy.  Then, take a look at Chad Jennings' report about today's action.  Add in the fact that the Yankees have $46 million invested in Igawa and you have to assume he has a real shot at breaking camp with the team.

Think about it, Karstens has blown up the past few weeks and while Rasner has been better, Igawa has the lower ERA.  Then, think about Andy Pettitte's back and you have to assume Igawa is a real possibility.

If Girardi truly likes guys who throw strikes and get ahead in the count, Iggy doesn't stand a chance. Rasner seems best suited right now for long relief, in spite of Iggy's ERA advantage. Karsten's has good stuff but can't seem to get the muscles to deliver the same "good stuff" on a consistent basis.

My guess = Rasner. But, hey, I've been wrong before ...

Not a significant sample size, but when I saw Igawa in Tampa he looked terrible. His body language was horrible when he got hit -- like he wanted to crawl in a hole and die. I guess he has a lot of pride and his problems in MLB are tough on him. But I'd like to see a bit more mental toughness.

And his control is just not good.

I think he needs another year in Triple A.

I think Igawa is a disaster that the Yankees would be best off trading, but I also think he has a shot. (and I am not happy about it)

Oh lovely, Rasner looks pretty bad right now - and Iggy STILL isn't the answer and Andy's getting pushed back and IPK's looking iffy at times. Where's Pavano when you need him - sorry, I'm in a bit of a sarcastic mood.

Maybe Aaron Small is available - and Shawn Chacon would consider coming back - dang, still being sarcastic. Scott Proctor? Anybody have any ideas here ??? - LOL

Pull Joba out of the pen? Seriously, if you are past Karstens, Rasner and Igawa, we are talking about the #9 starter now which probably means Chase Wright part 2?

Iggy pitches 3.33 innings giving up five hits, three BBS and four runs. Folks, this guys still isn't an "answer for today's needs" in my book. And Karstens leaves with a leg injury.

Moose is 1 year older and old, Andy is 1 year older and may not be the horse he's expected to be, CMW's getting hitting around a bit and the "three kids" are pitch count limited and unproven. Ohlendorf maybe? Bruney perhaps?

This may be shaping up to be a year that will require too many things to go right for us to contend in October. But hey, I've been wrong before ...
