The Best Titles Are The Unexpected Ones

I know this blog is about baseball, but as I have mentioned before I am a Giants fan which means I had a wonderful night last night. I admit that I felt the Giants were going to get creamed last night and that combined with the fact that the Patriots were 18-0 made it an especially sweet win.

The reason I mention this is not to antagonize any Patriots fans but to point out what the Yankees have been missing this century. At some point the bar was set so high that nothing less than a title would be acceptable. Remember 2003 and how empty that felt when the Yankees "only" go to the World Series? From 1998-2006 the Yankees won the AL East every year, how many of those did people celebrate? Other than the 1996 titles how many did you just enjoy versus Somewhere along the way we lost the pure joy of rooting for our team. Maybe it was seeing the countless "next big free agent" come in, maybe all the previous success made us jaded.

Whatever it was, I think they are heading back in the right direction. Not trading for Santana helps, bringing up the kids helps. Maybe we will never get back to that point where anything less than a World Series title is a failure, but I hope not because last night was a lot of fun.

Yes a little revenge to you Boston fans for 2004 world series. Now a Boston team lost in the "Worst upset Playoff game" in sports history.

Peter,

Victory is always sweeter when you've tasted defeat for a long time.

The victory was sweet to every Jints fan for the simple reason that, with us, nothing seemingly ever comes easy. From the Tittle years (my start) to best of the Tuna years, it was a downhill slide into humility - watching us compete with the likes of the Eagles to not finish last. Then some rings come along with the Tuna - only to be followed by many years, again, of loss and humiliation.

Last night was sweet not just for the fact that we got a bit of revenge for the 2K4 collapse of the Yankees, but mostly for the fact that it was a team ranked 5th going into the post-season, putting it all together in true Cinderella fashion. In a small way, last night's Jints reminded me of the LT years with the Tuna. Big Defense.

I also truly enjoyed watching Payton take such pleasure in his Eli's efforts.

It was great game. I am still hoarse from it. Now I just want to get a few Jints hats for my kids and for me wear on my next flight out west.

Well put. It has been a long 17 years from the humiliation of the SF playoff game to SB 35 to the meltdown against Minnesota to a another awful playoff game against the 49rs.

The thing that has always amazed me is the loyalty of the Giants fan. I got on the season ticket waiting list 20 years ago and I am still waiting, probably will be a lot longer now, but I don't mind.
