Congrats Goose!

Goose Gossage was elected to the Hall of Fame today, a well-deserved honor. If you don't remember Goose in a Yankees' uniform, you missed something. The guy was pure piss and vinegar out there and watching him mow down batters was always a lot of fun. Mariano may be the best I have ever seen, but Goose wasn't far behind.

One interesting note on the voting is that Mark McGwire got exactly the same number of votes this year as he did last. I wonder if it was the same 128 voters?

Goose making Yaz pop out to Nettles in foul territory will go with me to the grave. Well deserved.

The remarkable thing about that game in the context of today's game is that Goose went 2.2 innings.

What I remember about watching Goose was that he took every hit against him personally. He hated every batter he faced for wanting to hit his pitches. His in-game-glare was something.

The Goose was lights out for 2-3 innings. He's a great guy who deserves this award.

Of course, Sparky Lyle won the Cy Young the previous year for being lights out for, at times, 5-6 innings. Lyle's year in 1977 was the single greatest year for a Yankee reliever, though one year does not make a Hall of Fame career. Lyle also the first reliever to have music -- playing "Pomp and Circumstance" whenever he entered the game.

The thing I remember about the 1978 Boston game was the beautiful simplicity of Lemon's plan: go with the your best starter until he falters and then bring in the closer, regardless of the inning. The Yanks, who have not fared well in elimination games of late, may want to consider that going back to that plan.
