Santana Dreamin'

The Red Sox left Nashville without Johan Santana, but ESPN's Buster Olney reports "that the folks in position to have insight into the Johan Santana talks strongly believe that the Twins and Red Sox will eventually work out a deal." Olney references Mark Christianson of the Star Tribune as saying the Twins prefer a deal surrounding Jacoby Ellsbury and not Jon Lester.

I have no idea at this point if this deal will get done, but I think I can be forgiven for dreaming of a starting rotation that looks like this (Buster Olney also had a Red Sox rotation projection):

SP - Beckett
SP - Santana
SP - Matsuzaka
SP - Schilling
SP - Lester/Buchholz/Wakefield

That looks good. If/when Schilling is done after 2008, either Lester or Buchholz steps in full time. Same can be said for Wakefield.

If the Red Sox do trade Ellsbury, perhaps they will still deal Coco Crisp and focus on Japanese League star Kosuke Fukudome who today declared his ententions of playing in the Majors in 2008. Some say Fukudome isn't an ideal fit in CF, but his bat projects to be superior to Crisp's. A long shot though as Fukudome is expected to get at least $10mm a season based on what I've read.

I will be happy with Crisp in CF because of his defense, but he really needs to find his stroke again and give the Red Sox a 2004 or 2005 like performance with the bat. Could those 2 seasons really have been a fluke? Or did his finger injury in 2006 really set him back this much?

Anyway, the most newsworthy post, but something to keep our interest in the Hot Stove League as things have slowed to a crawl.

Love Santana, love the projected rotation for several years to come with Lester/Bucch subbing for Schillie and Wake as the years move on. But I hate, absolutely HATE giving up Ellsbury. I know he is young and unproven but he just has the look of a great lead off hitter, catalyst, and CF. He could even be a cornerstone player, especially with his speed, his age, and the rest of his game. I would much rather pay with Lester and company as well as pay Johan the $150M+ it will take to get an extension/long term deal done than give up Jacoby. Just my two cents and Andy, you know I would love to have Santanta.

Jack, totally agree. For whatever reason, probably seeing him in the playoffs, made me not want to trade him (Ellsbury). Unfortunately, it seems the Twins might want him. I guess they were watching the playoffs too.

I yhave a chicken bone, a liard skin, the scales of a pirana, and the eye of a newt. If this deal goes down and putting a voodoo hex on the sox.

Who knows, maybe it will work out in the end. Right about now I am routing for the Mets to come in and blow the Twinkies away with a great offer (if they have the people to do it as some say they do). Then we can feel good we tried, keep Ellsbury, have a good/great rotation anyway, move on to trading Coco and playing Ellsbury in CF, and maybe still get another starter (Bedard, Haren, or Blanton?) and bolster the pen. Am I asking too much to keep Jacoby and still get Santana? I guess so....

Grant, I'm worried you just took part in the chicken bone, lizard skin, scales of a piranha and the eye of a newt. You seem to be, you know, not able to communicate clearly. So are you for or against this deal? This sounds like a post-cocktail comment. Be honest...

Jack, I agree, the logical person would hope that Santana goes to the NL. But when you look at what he would bring, it makes you drool as a Red Sox fan (or any fan).

Thinking about it, you are right. Santana at $20mm or more per year is nuts and giving up 3 or 4 tops prospects is nuts too.

But, as you ask, the idea of getting Santana without dealing Ellsbury would be ideal. If the Red Sox offered the Lester deal (Lester + 3) and perhaps added a lower level minor leaguer, that might get it done. I just don't know. I would much prefer Ellsbury in CF next year than Crisp but what can you do. If you want Santana, it'll cost you.

I agree Andy. I mean Santana is a future HoF pitcher and probably the best pitcher in MLB right now. I just can't help feeling funny about moving Jacoby. I would do the Lester +3 or +4 (with Ryan Kalish) in a second. Not that I don't like Lester but the Lester deal is essentially moving Crisp for Santana and swapping him out with Lester in the rotation. Pretty good deal for the Sox and probably why the Twinkies don't want to do it. The deal is full of added minor leaguers (albeit good minor leaguers) but I think to get Santana the Sox move Lowrie/Masterson/Kalish in a second. I guess good trades should make you feel mixed about the results and if the Sox give up Jacoby, I will definitely feel mixed emotions. I guess we'll see.
