LaTroy Hawkins?
Reportedly, the Yankees are very close to a deal with Hawkins. I have to admit, at first glance, I didn't see why. But, it is a one-year deal and it "only" costs $3.75 million, so it is worth a shot. Worst case, the Yankees can eat the salary in a heartbeat. Best case and Hawkins becomes this year's Vizcaino, a solid 7th inning guy.
This may be all the Yankees do with the bullpen. With reliever prices soaring, the Yankees are likely to stay out of the market. That may not be a bad thing as one of Joe Girardi's strengths is his ability to work with young players. But, heading into 2008 relying on Ohlendorf, Ramirez and Veras to be big parts of the bullpen is a risk.

Seems as though the Yanks need to make some roster moves so they have room to announce Arod, Mo, and Hawkins. Can they trade a DeSalvo and Bruney for minor league talent to open up some room on their roster? Or do they just have to cut guys like that and hope they aren't claimed?

I would imagine they could for DeSalvo but not Bruney. I think Pavano will be cut if they can figure out the insurance.

On the positive side, Hawkins is a very decent, hard working person who will fit in well. He also has shown flashes of brilliance and the ability to raise his game a level during the post-season.
But, he's not a very good reliever. He's got Wohlers disease -- lays the ball right in there and gets drilled. I have post-traumatic stress watching him trying to close out games for the Twins. He's certainly better in the set up role, but he'll probably join Farnsworth, Karsay, Wohlers, Bruney in a long line of disappointing relievers.
Given that the market now realizes the importance of middle relief, the Yanks are just going to have to solve their bullpen problems with internal candidates. The good news is they seem to have a lot of good looking young arms.

I agree Corey, the market for relievers is crazy and their performance is so variable that I think the Yankees should just throw their kids in there and see what happens.

Here's a "procedural" question for someone.
Right now, we've got some players whose contracts are "pending", like Posada & PayRod. Cashman is trying to get Pavano to take a buyout and go to AAA so we can free up a roster spot and collect on the insurance and (of course), Pavano is holding up the process, possibly trying to extract a goodbye ki$$. Nice guy, ya know?
Question is, is there a limit to how long we can delay adding these newly signed FAs back to the 40 man roster?
Thanks!

Mitchell- Posada is officially back, they are waiting on Rivera, A-Rod and Hawkins.
There is technically no limit on how long they can wait because the contract hasn't been finalized. But, theoretically that means they can still sign deals with other clubs.
