This Changes Things

Maybe I am reading the tea leaves incorrectly here, but I think this deal would greatly lessen the chances Minnesota trades Santana. Are they willing to subtract a second starter after trading away Garza?

And, consider the addition of Young on the Twins' offense. Mauer-Young-Morneau in the middle of the lineup looks pretty good I think you have definitely made up for the loss of Hunter. With Liriano coming back, why wouldn't the Twins at least try and compete in 2008?

I would also be remiss if I didn't point out that Tampa suddenly getting wise about pitching is not a great development for the Yankees. If they add Garza to Shields and Kazmir, you suddenly have the potential for a very good 1-2-3 at the top of the rotation. Add Percival to the bullpen and all the young hitters and Tampa won't be so easy to beat up on anymore.

Garza is an awfully promising pitcher to let go. But the Twins have a surplus of pitching and are going to deal somebody.

If they get Young for Garza, though, they will have gotten somebody as good or better than Melky without having to let go of their big horse. Then the only way the Yanks get Santana is to deal Cano or a lot of their own good young pitchers.

Corey, I think you hit the nail on the head and from a Yankees perspective, I don't see them doing that.

Peter, I think this is a good deal for TB and not so hot for MN. Delmon Young doesn't exactly impress. Since being promoted to AAA in 2005, his best OPS is .813.

He doesn't walk and has limited power for a corner outfielder. Bad combo. 13 HRs in 2007, 13 in 2006 (between AAA and MLB). He did hit well in A and AA ball (.922 OPS in 2004 and .968 OPS in 2005 at AA), but hasn't done much since. While he is just 22 years old and stands to get better, I'm not sure he is what people thought he'd be. Add to that, he has serious character issues (threw bat at ump in 2006/AAA).

So the Twins are getting worse in this case.

But, more to your point, it is interesting that they'd move Garza AND Santana. I'm not sure it makes sense. Or maybe Garza isn't all that good either. He did have a 2-1 k/bb ration in 2007, not great, but again, he is young. So I guess I'm saying, I don't know what his means. Maybe I should have kept all this to my self.

Andy, I think TB get more than just Garza as well. There HAS to be more to this than that.

Tim, you are right. Here's the official deal:

TB gets: Garza, Jason Barlett (their starting SS) and minor league pitcher Eduardo Morlan.

Minn gets: Young, Brendan Harris (another SS) and minor leaguer OF Jason Pridie.
