Schilling

Buster Olney of ESPN is reporting that Curt Schilling and the Red Sox have agreed to a 1 year deal with a base of $8mm.  Bill Burt of the Eagle Tribune indicates it is official but isn't able to confirm the details of the arrangement.

I like this deal.

2008 rotation:

Beckett, Matsuzaka, Schilling, Buccholz, Lester and Wakefield

Yes that's 6 starters, but remember when the Red Sox dealt Bronson Arroyo prior to the 2006 season only to need another starter?  You can never have enough starters.  Your grandfather said it and his father said it, you can never have enough starting pitching.

Also, give both sides credit.  The Red Sox said "no thanks" to signing Schilling to a 1 year $13mm deal in spring training and are now benefiting from that decision as they are likely to get him for less than that based on reports.  Schilling is also due a ton of credit for recognizing what is important to him.  I am only guessing here of course, but I have to assume he likes the idea of staying in Boston so he can run his other business, 38 Studios (formerly Green Monster Games, right?) located in Maynard, and for providing a very comfortable payday and family continuity.

Both sides win and this is good for the Red Sox.

Other storylines at the GM meetings:  What will happen with Coco Crisp, Johan Santana, Scott Kazmir, Torii Hunter, Andy Pettitte (declined his $16mm option, see Peter's post below), Miguel Cabrera, Joe Crede for Johnny Damon and of course the dummest player on Earth, ARod.  If ARod get's his $350mm starting price, he has essentially guaranteed himself a lousy team around him.  Enjoy ARod.

-single biggest off season move out there is Lowell (importance to the Sox)

ok, how about this:

a) sign lowell
b) package Delcarmen, Lester, Crisp, half of Crisp's salary to Minnesota for Santana (with extention in hand).

Twins get 2 cheap good to very good pitchers and a Tori Hunter replacement at a value.

Sox get yet another innings eater and ace.

Beckett
Santana
Matsuzaka
Schilling
Buchholz
Wakefield

check-mate!

Santana will be 29 in March. He has 4 consecutive years over 200 innings. He becomes the Schilling replacement after next year and the loss of Lester and Delcarmen is necessary to get him. I think Delcarmen's value might be higher than Lester's at this point.

Would Minnesota do this?

Would you do this?

Blmeanie, I would make that move in a minute, but I don't think MN would bite. Lester has questions marks and Crisp is not Hunter. I think the starting price for Santana will be: Buccholz AND Lester, Crisp. I don't see any other way around it. I really don't think I would do that b/c it would throw whole idea of grooming from within to the curb. I like the idea of having young guys come up that make only $300k. That allows for resources to be put elsewhere (i.e. the thin positions around MLB). So no, I wouldn't do it based on what I think MN would want, but I would do it based on what your deal.

so no value on Delcarmen?

take my deal and throw in any other minor leaguer other than Buchholz and see if they bite.

He's got value, but he did struggle in the playoffs posting an 8.31 ERA with 7 hits and 3 walks in 4.1 IP.

That probably hurt his value as it is the last anyone saw of him (scouts are influenced by the most recent outing of a player).

I like Delcarmen and think he will be an important part of the bullpen for the next few years, but when we are talking about Santana, MN will want so much. There has been talk that the starting price got for the Yankees would be Chamberlain and Hughes.

I have to imagine the it would be Buccholz and Lester and maybe a Bowden or Masterson too.

Remember that MN is the team that pulled off one of the best deals ever in getting Boof Bonser, Francisco Liriano and Joe Nathan for AJ Pierzynski and cash.

Bonser struggled this year and Liriano was out all season recovering from surgery after having an amazing 2006 while Nathan continued his dominating ways. My point? They got 3 arms from SF in that deal and will probably look for a similar deal for whoever wants Santana.

perhaps, except Santana is unsignable by MN in my opinion.

They will ask and someone will pay, doesn't make it right :)
