« Moose Replacement? | Main | Day Off »

Keep It In Perspective

It's tough to remember as you go through the season, but I bet 16 games ago, you would be happy to have the Yankees where they are now. 9-7 though the tough 20-game stretch. This allows them to finish the stretch 2-2 and still come out over .500.

(Now, to be honest, 2-2 would leave me wanting more. I want a win tomorrow and a win in the Red Sox series, nothing less than that.)

The other thing to remember is that Seattle is going to start facing some very tough competition. Three@ LA, One@Cleveland, 3@Toronto and then the big one, 3@ the Stadium. And, when they finish that stretch they still have 11 games left with Cleveland, LA and Detroit.

So, despite the tough losses, bad play and general malaise I feel tonight, things are ok. Tomorrow morning we will wake up and the Yankees will either be 2 or 3 games out of the wild card. Not wonderful, but considering the whole picture, not terrible.

One last note, I am off on a family trip for the next week, but hopefully I will be able to check in with some updates along the way.

Don't forget the "second" trading deadline is Friday, if Moose gets bombed, I would bet a veteran starter shows up courtesy of Brian Cashman.

Comments

Yes, I veteran starter will be needed indeed. Having a rookie such as Clippard, Karstens, Wright, or kennedy isn't going to cut it every 5th day in September.

What will happen with Moose though? Will he be regulated to the bullpen for long relief?

They'll pretty much end up playing.500 on the road, but given the hole they dug for themselves, I was hoping for better.

Now they have to win one against Detroit and come back and play their absolute best against Boston & Seattle.

This has been a tough year. Next year will be even tougher. Guys like Hughes, Chamberlain, and Kennedy are going to take a few years to develop. If they don't get it done this year, they really won't have another good shot for a few years.

To win this year, I think you need to get veterans like Damon and Giambi to play every day. Against righties, I'd start Giambi at first, Damon at DH, Cabrera in CF. And let's face it, there are no good alternatives to Mussina. You got to bet on the old horses and hope they come through.

Moose is fooling no one at this point. End of the 3rd, 72 pitches, 9 hits, down 6 zip. Would have been more if it hadn't been for some nice fielding plays. Definitely, definitely.

Yankees look rattled. Losing this one is going to hurt a lot.

Well, that was about as ugly as it gets.

Do they put Mussina on the DL to make room? Do they send down Henn and make Mussina the long man while they call up Kennedy?

Ramirez doesn't seem able to pitch in the bigs just yet. Will we finally see Britton in his place?

Can't wait to see the 25 man roster for tomorrow.

Gotta love Bruney's brass. First pitch he throws is a high and tight fastball, basically saying, "Fellas, this night is long enough, let's end this thing now and go home". Loved it.

I think Moose goes to the long relief spot. He's done well out of the pen before and he was heading there anyway for the playoffs. Henn might be the only guy more worthless than Moose.

The Yanks need a 5th starter once (TB Sept 1st) until Bos (Sept 15th)with the days off. There are 31 games left. We can play the next 16 games and use our best 4 starters for all but 1 of the games.

I think the Yanks have to try that. They can reassess where they are with 15 games to go but if they can put the pedal to the metal for the next 16 games they might be able to make some serious ground on Seattle and go back to a 5 game rotation for the last 15 games.

12-8 (.600%) over a nightmare 20 game stretch. I think, proof positive that the Yanks are a serious contenders THIS year. The Yanks went 11-6 against the best 4 teams in the AL.

The Yanks are 54-30 since May 30th (.643%) and 32-16 (.666) since the all-star break.

No time for back pats though the next 9 games, 6 vs. TB & KC with a monster 3 game set against Seattle can put the Yanks solidly in control of the wild card.

It's looking good.
