The Deadline Looms

I hate to break this for you Red Sox Fans, but Andy has selfishly gone on a family vacation which means you are stuck with me for the next 24 hours. Then again, I am quite sure this experience will do us both some good.

Anyway, for the next day I will be dishing info about both teams, Yankees and Red Sox as we approach the non-waiver deadline.

So far, not much is going on. The Red Sox were reportedly close to getting Jermaine Dye but that deal seems to have stalled.

The Yankees and Red Sox are both in Gagne according to Jason Stark, but the Rangers asked for Hughes or Chamberlain from the Yankees which won't happen and Gagne can block a trade to Boston which means the Red Sox would probably have to pony up some cash. (Don't forget Scott Boras is Gagne's agent)

The big movers are clearly the Braves who have reportedly landed Teixeria and could be adding Octavio Dotel (see above) and maybe even Bronson Arroyo

If the Braves make all those moves would that compel the Mets to up the ante on Gagne? What do you think will happen? Feel free to vote below

Thanks for filling in Peter. Should be an exciting day today.

Being in Atlanta for 17 years now (adopted second fav team behind the Sox), these moves trouble me and excite me at the same time.

Salty is going to be a star. Write it down. They just traded a young Mike Piazza (that can catch also btw). This guy could end up with 35+ HR year in year out.

But, Texiera fills the one significant weakness the Braves have in the lineup. Add in Dotel and or Arroyo and they should be the favorites for the wildcard at least.

It's interesting that the mid market teams are making the moves and the small market teams that usually jettison expensive players seem to be quiet.

I hope the Sox aren't stupid enough to think Jermaine Dye helps. Despite some decent numbers in his Royals and WhiteSox years, this guy is not what they need. Texiera would have made more sense with Ortiz "struggling" with his power this year. Oh well.

The interest in Dye puzzles me because the only way I could see them using him would be to shift Drew to center and play him in right which seems like a bad idea. Dye is in his wal;k year, so I don't think he will take kindly to not playing every day.

As for the Braves, they appear to have given up a lot, but they have a remarkable track record of trading away overvalued prospects. Maybe this will be the one that burns them, but if they cap off today with another reliever and starter they will be in very good shape.
