Yanks Add Garcia
31 Jan 2011
Ken Rosenthal tweets that the Yankees have signed Freddy Garcia to a minor league deal. Garcia is an upgrade over Sergio Mitre in the fifth spot and if he can replicate his 2010 performance (4.64 ERA over 157 innings) in 2011 they would be thrilled.
An area of concern is the drop in his strikeout rate and the increase in his walk rate, but overall this is a solid move. Nothing really risked and a definite upgrade over the current alternatives for the rotation.

Good ! Throw enough pasta at the wall and something should stick …

ahhh Mitchell, I’d prefer you didn’t use pasta as your metaphor, I’m currently on an all organic diet and pasta and anything with gluten is excluded as well. Perhaps “throw enough salad at the wall…” – never mind, doesn’t work as well.
When will the Yanks determine their 4th starter? I agree, wall sticking choices works for 5th but don’t they have a concern on 4th still?

Oops, sorry for the pasta imagery Peter. Did you know they make gluten-free chocolate chip and oreo-style cookies? Man o man those are, uh, waitaminute um, just forget I said that!
Fourth starter? At this point, Peter, I’m worried about everyone after CC: Phil became hittable in the 2nd half, AJ was unwatchable and Nova was only sharp until the 4th or 5th inning. As Cashman freely admits, we need some starters.

Mitchell
That was BL, not me. I eat regular pasta with pleasure, though I did try some whole wheat pasta last week and it wasn’t too bad.
If I had to guess CC, AJ, Hughes, Nova, someone. Good thing they have a really good bullpen.

My bad, Peter!
Steve? You gotta try the gluten-free chocolate chip cookies. They are wonderful!
Peter – I’m sort of hoping to see Brackman on that list. Garcia’s stuff is another version of Javy’s (and that didn’t play so well).

Gluten-free? Guys has it really come to this?
Mitchell- Don’t disagree about Garcia’s stuff, but I don’t think he is going to make 26 starts for the Yankees like Javy did either.
To me 2011 will be about getting to the All-Star Break in contention for a playoff spot. By then, some of the young arms will hopefully be ready to step up and deliver. If not, hopefully another team is ready to trade someone who is. Either way, I think we all know this team isn’t a finished product at this point.
Personally, I would love to see the Yankees have the guts to open the season with Nova and Phelps or two other rookies in the rotation. After the Kennedy/Hughes disaster in ’08, I would bet everything against it, but I would love to see it. It’s the only way to avoid offering $150 million to Cliff Lee or $82.5 to AJ Burnett.
