You Can’t Do That
30 Aug 2008
The loss was bad enough today, but this story really bugs me. Cano has been terrible this year and that was another half-assed play in a season with too many of those from him. But, to not stick around and face reporters makes it even worse.
Girardi needs to put an end to this and get in this kids’ face. I would bench him tomorrow and make sure everyone knows why you are benching him. It’s pathetic to say, but Cano obviously needs a babysitter like Larry Bowa harping at him, the Yankees need to find someone for that role next season.

- Begin rant
It never ceases to amaze me that media muffins get angry when someone decides to avoid sticking around in order to be asked, in effect, “how stupid do you feel having made a human error?”. Yeah, he’s well paid and blah, blah blah – but he’s paid for his baseball talent, not his media manipulating skills. New York kills too many players with its media spotlight as is – we need to keep doing this to screw up another budding talent in our organization?
Yeah, the kid needs to improve his play but so do ARod, IRod, and just about every other Yankee player. Our fans right now are behaving like spoiled brats when an MVP like ARod hits a bad streak.
I really don’t need some bozo reporter teeing up another player for me to maul.
And benching someone as a punishment is sometimes the worst thing you can do to bring a young player along. I would let him go home to reflect on what he needs to do to play better, not force him to take crap from media muffins who are experts (having, typically, never made it to the bigs themeselves) about what it SHOULD look like, not what it sometimes does look like on the baseball field in the bigs.
